Nirvana Makes a Spectacular Comeback with Joan Jett, Kim Gordon, and St. Vincent

Nirvana Stuns Fans with Surprise Reunion featuring Joan Jett, Kim Gordon, and St. Vincent

Fans were taken by surprise on Thursday night with an unexpected reunion of Nirvana, featuring a rotating lineup of female artists stepping in for the late Kurt Cobain. Drumming duties were handled by Dave Grohl, while Pat Smear played guitar and Krist Novoselic was on bass.

In a touching moment, Grohl’s 18-year-old daughter, Violet, who often performs alongside her father, joined him for the song “All Apologies,” adding a special family touch to the evening of alt-rock legends.

This special, one-time performance was part of over a dozen acts at Inglewood’s Kia Forum, as part of the dual FireAid benefit concerts. The event aimed to raise funds for recovery efforts following devastating wildfires in the Los Angeles County area that have tragically claimed at least two dozen lives.

The band energetically rushed through four classic Nirvana songs, though the audio quality fluctuated at times, particularly during St. Vincent’s intense rendition of “Breed.” However, the energy never wavered, particularly when Kim Gordon passionately performed “School” and Joan Jett delivered a fierce version of “Territorial Pissings.”

Nirvana’s last performance with Cobain occurred on April 5, 1994, a month before his untimely death at age 27, in Germany. The most recent performance prior to this reunion, which included Gordon, Jett, and Lorde, was during the band’s induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2014.

The event boasted a star-studded lineup that also featured Joni Mitchell, The Black Crowes, Stevie Nicks, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers at the Forum. Meanwhile, performances at the nearby Intuit Dome included artists like Stevie Wonder, Lady Gaga, Billie Eilish, Rod Stewart, and Katy Perry.

This reunion was not part of FireAid’s originally scheduled program.

This marked the first occasion where Grohl, the Foo Fighters frontman, and his daughter Violet performed together since public news of a new family member emerged after he and his wife welcomed another daughter last fall. Grohl has been married to Jordyn Blum since August 2003, and they have kept their relationship largely away from the public eye, raising three daughters together.

Organizers indicated that the funds raised would be “distributed under the advisement of the Annenberg Foundation” and allocated for both immediate relief efforts and initiatives aimed at preventing future fire disasters in Southern California.

The benefit concerts occurred just three days ahead of the 67th annual Grammy Awards, set to take over Crypto.com Arena in downtown LA on Sunday.

Due to the recent Southern California wildfires, numerous events related to the Grammy ceremonies were canceled. Nevertheless, celebrations that will proceed, such as a MusiCares concert honoring The Grateful Dead and the Clive Davis Pre-Grammy Gala, will focus on philanthropy to support first responders.
