Nvidia’s CEO Meets Trump Amid Talks of New Chip Export Limits to China
Jensen Huang, the CEO of Nvidia, a prominent producer of computer chips used by AI firms, is set to meet with President Donald Trump as the administration considers implementing additional restrictions on the export of advanced chips to China.
The meeting takes place during a tumultuous week for the AI sector, triggered by Chinese startup DeepSeek, which has caused Nvidia’s stock prices to drop significantly.
Huang’s visit to the White House was planned for Friday, according to an administration source. An Nvidia representative chose not to comment on the meeting.
According to a report by Reuters, the Trump administration is in the initial phases of deliberating over new limits on the sale of AI chips to China, as per information from three anonymous sources.
Nvidia’s sophisticated computer chips are in high demand within the AI sector, positioning the California-based company as one of the standout successes in the tech field in recent times.
DeepSeek claims to have developed a more cost-effective AI model than top competitors. This revelation has alarmed AI investors, leading to a decline in stock prices for various American firms heavily invested in AI technology.
If DeepSeek succeeds in demonstrating that AI can be developed with less financial input, this could result in decreased demand for Nvidia’s chips and raise worries that China might be closing the gap with the U.S. in the AI arena.
Limiting the access of Nvidia chips in China could hinder the country’s progress in AI. Former President Joe Biden had already laid down restrictions on AI chip exports to China, yet Nvidia continues to sell its H20 chip there. The Trump administration is now contemplating imposing restrictions on that chip as well.
