Ohio Governor Mike DeWine Dismisses False Claims About Migrants Eating Pets
On Sunday, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine strongly criticized claims made by former President Donald Trump alleging that Haitian immigrants are consuming pets like dogs and cats in Springfield, Ohio, labeling such remarks as “hurtful” and “unhelpful.”
“There’s a lot of misinformation online, and this is simply a falsehood that lacks any supporting evidence,” DeWine stated during an interview on ABC’s “This Week.” “These individuals positively contribute to our Springfield community, and negative comments about them are damaging and counterproductive to the city and its residents.”
The governor pointed out that the unfounded claims propagated by Trump, Ohio Senator JD Vance, and others have no factual basis. He mentioned that both the mayor of Springfield and its police chief confirmed the absence of evidence to support these accusations.
Trump had introduced the rumors, which had begun circulating on social media, during a recent presidential debate with Vice President Kamala Harris. Following the debate, there have been threats directed at the Haitian immigrant community in Springfield.
The governor also acknowledged that while the arrival of immigrants has presented challenges for the city—including demands on resources—the migrants have indeed added positively to the local community and its economy.
“Springfield is a wonderful city filled with friendly and welcoming individuals. We face daily challenges that we are actively addressing,” DeWine expressed.
“It is important to note that the Haitians in Springfield are there legally and came here to pursue job opportunities. Ohio is progressing, and Springfield is experiencing a remarkable resurgence with many businesses increasing their presence,” DeWine concluded.
