Shohei Ohtani pitching in playoffs? Dodgers say chances of return ‘not zero’
Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani is having an incredible season, inching closer to being the first player in MLB history to hit 50 home runs and steal 50 bases in one year.
While he’s excelling as a hitter, his pitching abilities are also phenomenal. However, he has not pitched this year due to recovery from elbow surgery he underwent in 2023.
As the Dodgers head into the postseason, could there be a chance we’ll see Ohtani pitch in a key game?
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts has not dismissed that possibility, stating that there is “not a 0% chance.”
“Anything’s possible,” Roberts mentioned this week. “This is a long-term situation. We have to work hard to reach October and succeed then. I hope that thought motivates him during his recovery. While the likelihood is very low, it’s not impossible.”
This season, the Dodgers’ pitching lineup has faced significant challenges due to injuries, with key players like Tyler Glasnow, Clayton Kershaw, and Gavin Stone currently on the injured list.
Ohtani is currently batting .290 with 47 home runs, 104 RBIs, and has stolen 48 bases during this season for the Dodgers, who are leading the NL West by 4.5 games over the Arizona Diamondbacks.
“We must all be confident that he can handle the stress of pitching if such an opportunity arises,” Roberts added. “We need to be in agreement on this, and it must make complete sense. For now, my focus is on keeping Ohtani concentrated on batting and his rehabilitation. If a pitching situation comes up in the future—and it’s a long way off—we can discuss it then.”
