Paramore Channels Iconic Freddie Mercury Moment at Wembley Eras Tour
LONDON — On Saturday, Paramore kicked off Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour, drawing inspiration from a legendary moment in Wembley Stadium’s past.
As they approached their final track “This Is Why,” lead vocalist Hayley Williams felt inspired to make a bold statement.
“I’ve always wanted to try this,” she announced before passionately singing “ay-oh.”
The audience responded in kind, recognizing the homage to Freddie Mercury, who mesmerized Wembley during a remarkable 20-minute set at Live Aid in 1985.
Williams and the crowd exchanged the sustained notes of “ay-yo.”
“Oh my f***ing God,” Williams exclaimed in awe.
Paramore Engages with and Celebrates Fans
Earlier in their performance, Williams paused to check on the crowd.
“We need to stop,” she declared just moments into “Only Exception” when she noticed a fan requiring medical assistance. “Is everyone okay?”
The sold-out stadium, filled to about 70-80% capacity to see Swift, fell silent.
“Hold on, let’s ensure they’re alright before we continue,” Williams requested, her voice echoing in the stillness. “Wow, Wembley Stadium is so quiet.”
As paramedics made their way to assist the fan among the crowded floor, cameras caught sight of two fans displaying signs that read, “We got married yesterday” and “Still Into You was our first dance.”
“Where are you?” Williams asked, spotting them on the big screen, and sent her congratulations their way.
As scattered cheers welcomed the newly engaged couple, Williams returned her focus to the fan needing help.
“Can we see a thumbs up if they’re okay?” she inquired, awaiting confirmation. “Great, we got a thumbs up.”
Not long after, a fan was seen being escorted out by three safety personnel in bright yellow vests.
Paramore resumed their performance with “Only Exception.” The American rock band has two more shows left opening for Taylor Swift in London, having accompanied her throughout Europe since May.
