Pat McAfee announces Aug. 19 will be his final WWE Monday Night Raw for the foreseeable future
On August 19, Pat McAfee will host his last WWE show for some time.
The prominent sports media figure and WWE announcer shared on his Instagram story that the event in Fort Lauderdale, Florida will mark the “last Monday Night Raw for a while.”
“It’s a real downer that tonight is my last visit with the amazing WWE family for a bit,” he expressed.
While McAfee did not specify the reasons for his temporary departure, it is likely linked to the upcoming college and professional football seasons, which he has expressed enthusiasm about. The former punter for the Indianapolis Colts hosts ESPN’s weekly College GameDay, starting this Saturday with a matchup between Florida State and Georgia Tech in Dublin, Ireland. He also runs “The Pat McAfee Show” daily and contributes to ESPN’s NFL coverage.
It’s unclear when or if McAfee will make a return to WWE broadcasts, but if it happens, it’s likely to be around the end of the football season, possibly near the Royal Rumble scheduled for February 1, 2025, at the Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, which is his former playing ground. After being away from WWE programming for most of 2023, he made his comeback at the January 2024 Royal Rumble and joined Michael Cole on the Monday Night Raw commentary team since then.
“WWE is where I truly belong, and I recognize that,” McAfee shared.
His break from WWE occurs as the organization plans to overhaul its broadcasting teams in the upcoming weeks. Recently, WWE revealed that veteran ESPN play-by-play announcer Joe Tessitore will join as a commentator. During SummerSlam, WWE announced that Tessitore would take over the Monday Night Raw role starting on September 2, while Cole shifts to Friday Night SmackDown. The commentary partners for Tessitore and Cole are yet to be disclosed.
