Patti Smith reassures fans after onstage fall in Brazil: ‘Trust me, I am okay’
Patti Smith wants to assure her fans that she’s “okay” after she made headlines for collapsing during a concert on Wednesday.
While performing at the Cultura Artística Theater in São Paulo, Brazil, Smith unexpectedly fell. She took to Instagram shortly after to clear up any confusion regarding the event.
“I want to let everyone know that I’m fine. The media and social platforms are spreading a greatly exaggerated story,” Smith mentioned in a detailed post on Instagram. “I experienced some dizziness after a migraine. I had a minor incident, left the stage, but returned in 10 minutes to speak with the audience, reassured them I was fine, and continued to sing.”
Smith urged her fans to “trust” her after the incident received widespread attention: “A fantastic doctor checked me out and confirmed I was perfectly fine. Please disregard any other narratives,” she added, stating that “considering all the turmoil in the world, this understandable incident doesn’t deserve so much focus.”
In a video shared on X the following day, Smith addressed concert-goers directly.
Following her fall, she returned to the stage and expressed, “I’m really sorry, I was so excited to be here,” describing Brazil as “a wonderful country” and São Paulo as “a magnificent city.”
“I have always believed—and believe even more now—that the most beautiful aspect of it is the people,” Smith remarked.
“You’ve all been incredibly patient, and sadly I got ill, so the doctor said I couldn’t continue. We’ll need to figure something out,” she expressed to her fans. “I feel truly bad about this.”
Smith is collaborating with the Berlin-based experimental sound group, Soundwalk Collective, on their joint project “Correspondences,” which is set to run until February 22.
‘Thank you, Taylor’: Fall during concert comes in a hectic year for Patti Smith, including mention by Taylor Swift
The past year has been quite eventful for Smith, who has unexpectedly found herself included in Taylor Swift’s “Tortured Poets Department.”
Back in April, the poet and singer expressed her gratitude to Swift on Instagram after being referenced in the pop star’s recent album. In the track “The Tortured Poets Department,” Swift sings, “You’re not Dylan Thomas. I’m not Patti Smith. This ain’t the Chelsea Hotel. We’re modern idiots.”
“I was touched to be mentioned alongside the great Welsh poet Dylan Thomas,” Smith wrote in her Instagram post, alongside photos of her reading Thomas’ book “Portrait of the Artist as a Young Dog.”
“Thank you, Taylor,” she concluded.
