ANSWERS Pet Food Issues Recall Over Salmonella, Listeria Risks: Essential Info for Pet Owners
ANSWERS Pet Food is initiating a recall for several products “as a precautionary measure” due to possible contamination with salmonella and listeria, according to the Food and Drug Administration.
The recall was prompted after the FDA discovered these harmful bacteria in samples of the brand’s pet food.
The affected products include ANSWERS’ Detailed Beef Formula for Dogs, Straight Beef Formula for Dogs, and Straight Chicken Formula for Dogs. No illnesses connected to this recall have been reported as stated in the FDA’s announcement.
“While listeria monocytogenes is uncommon in dogs, it can still occur,” the announcement noted. “Dogs exposed to it may show mild symptoms like diarrhea and vomiting.”
Pet owners who have fed these recalled products to their dogs should reach out to their veterinarian for guidance, the FDA recommended.
Can Dogs Spread the Bacteria to Humans?
There is a possibility that dogs who are exposed to these bacteria but do not exhibit any symptoms may pass it on to their human owners.
Individuals handling the contaminated food without properly washing their hands afterwards might also be at risk of exposure to the bacteria.
What Should You Do With the Recalled Product?
According to the FDA, the recalled food should be “disposed of or destroyed in a manner that prevents children, pets, and wildlife from getting to it.”
Here are some recommended actions:
- Avoid handling the recalled food with your bare hands
- Sanitize surfaces that came in contact with the food
- Wear gloves or use paper towels when placing food in a sealed bag prior to disposal
