Antarctica’s Cretaceous Treasure: Discovery of the First Modern Bird Fossil

Sixty-six million years ago, at the end of the Cretaceous Period, an asteroid impact near the Yucat n Peninsula of Mexico triggered the extinction of all known non-bird dinosaurs. But for the early ancestors of today's waterfowl, surviving that mass extinction event was like ... water off a duck's back. Location matters, as Antarctica may

Pete Alonso’s New Chapter: Mets Secure Star First Baseman with $54 Million Deal After Prolonged Free Agency

Pete Alonso returning to Mets with $54 million deal after extended free agency

The “Polar Bear” is back in Queens.

First baseman Pete Alonso has reached an agreement on a two-year, $54 million contract with the New York Mets, which includes an option to opt-out after the first year. This marks his return to the team that originally drafted him, following a lengthy period of negotiations, as confirmed by a source familiar with the deal.

The source discussed the matter with YSL News Sports on the condition of anonymity since the agreement has not been finalized.

As one of the top power hitters in Major League Baseball, only Aaron Judge has hit more home runs than Alonso since he joined the league in 2019, where he set the record for home runs by a rookie with 53.

Now at 30 years old, Alonso boasts an impressive average of 43 home runs and 112 RBIs per 162 games over his six seasons with the Mets.

For the 2025 season, Alonso will receive $30 million, which includes a signing bonus, along with a $24 million player option for the 2026 season.

Drafted in the second round out of Florida in 2016, Alonso has spent his entire professional career with the New York Mets and quickly became a fan favorite. His 226 home runs place him third on the Mets’ all-time homer list, trailing only Darryl Strawberry and David Wright.

In the 2024 season, Alonso faced challenges during his contract year, recording career-lows in slugging percentage (.459) and OPS (.788). Nevertheless, he made a significant impact in the postseason, blasting four home runs and driving in 10 runs with a remarkable .999 OPS in 13 games as the Mets advanced to the National League Championship Series against the eventual World Series champions, the Dodgers.

His iconic ninth-inning home run in Game 3 of the wild-card series off All-Star closer Devin Williams helped keep the Mets’ postseason hopes alive in what could have been his final at-bat with the team.

Standing 6-foot-3 and weighing 245 pounds, Alonso has greatly enhanced his defensive skills at first base and is now regarded as one of the league’s most dependable defenders, ranking highly in scoop percentage.

Alonso participated in all 162 games in 2024 and ranks second in games played since 2019, just behind Marcus Semien.

During his rookie season in 2019, Alonso made history as the first Mets position player to win Rookie of the Year since Strawberry in 1983, earned his first of four All-Star selections, and triumphed in the Home Run Derby, a title he would reclaim in 2021.
