California Police Unveil Details of Sexual Assault Allegation Against Pete Hegseth

A woman who alleges she was sexually assaulted by Pete Hegseth, Donald Trump’s nominee for Defense Department head, informed police in 2017 that he stopped her from leaving a hotel room and was on top of her, according to documents recently acquired by YSL News.

The victim shared her fragmented memories from that night, mentioning that she repeatedly said “no” and claimed Hegseth took her phone and blocked the door with his body, based on records from the Monterey Police Department.

Monterey police officials reversed a previous decision from last week that denied access to the 22-page police report, ultimately releasing a redacted version to YSL News late Wednesday that refers to the victim as Jane Doe. They noted that Hegseth himself requested the report in 2021, and a specific legal provision allowed the report’s release.

Both Hegseth and his legal team have denied that the incident constituted rape. Several media outlets reported that Hegseth had settled financially as a result of the claims. His attorney stated earlier this week that “Mr. Hegseth is completely innocent.”

The newly obtained document elaborates on the allegations related to an event that took place in October 2017 at the Hyatt Hotel following a California Federation of Republican Women function where Hegseth gave a speech.

The woman, then 30 years old, sought assistance from a sexual assault nurse examiner on October 12, just four days after the incident, according to the police report.

She reported having consumed champagne and suggested that something might have been added to her drink. While she recalled being in a hotel room with Hegseth on top of her, she expressed uncertainty to police about whether she had been sexually assaulted.

“Doe recalls Hegseth preventing her from leaving and somehow finding himself on top of her,” according to the report. She reported that Hegseth threw a towel at her, asking, “Are you okay?” and instructed her to “clean it up.”

The report indicated that “Doe does not remember what transpired after that except for ending up back in her hotel room.”

The police interviewed Hegseth about the incident on October 26. He stated he had been drinking beer but insisted that he was not drunk, affirming that he took the woman back to his hotel room for a consensual encounter.

According to the report, “They would both pause and say, ‘we shouldn’t do this,’ but their consensual interaction continued,” with Hegseth confirming that he ejaculated on her stomach.

The police concluded their investigation that day and sent their findings to the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office for potential charges, but that office chose not to pursue charges against Hegseth.
