Revolutionary Polymer Paves the Way for Advanced Data Storage Solutions

A new material for high density data storage can be erased and recycled in a more efficient and sustainable way, providing a potential alternative to hard disk drives, solid-state drives and flash memory in future. The low-cost polymer stores data as 'dents', making a miniscule code in patterns, with the indents just nanometers in size

Phillies Strike Deal with Marlins to Bring in Pitcher Jesus Luzardo

The Phillies get pitcher Jesus Luzardo from the Marlins in exchange for prospects

The Philadelphia Phillies made a deal on Sunday, acquiring left-handed pitcher Jesus Luzardo from the Miami Marlins.

In return, the Phillies will send shortstop Starlyn Caba and outfielder Emaarion Boyd to the Marlins, who will also include minor league catcher Paul McIntosh in the trade.

According to MLB Pipeline, Caba is ranked as Philadelphia’s fourth-best prospect while Boyd is ranked 23rd.

Luzardo, who is 27 years old, has a career record of 26 wins and 34 losses with an ERA of 4.29 across 105 games (89 of them as a starter) while playing for the Oakland Athletics from 2019 to 2021 and the Marlins. In 2024, he was restricted to just 12 starts because of issues with left elbow tightness and a lumbar stress reaction, which caused him to miss the rest of the season after June 22. He ended the season with a record of 3 wins and 6 losses and an ERA of 5.00.

While attending a Marlins holiday community event, Luzardo shared with MLB.com that he is feeling good.

“I’ve been able to maintain my regular offseason training: throwing, running, and starting to work off the mound,” Luzardo stated. “I’m feeling really good overall, including my elbow and back, and I’m gearing up for spring training with the goal of being 100 percent ready for opening day, and right now, everything feels great, and we’re all set to go.”

During the 2023 season, Luzardo finished with a record of 10 wins and 10 losses and an ERA of 3.58 across 32 starts. He achieved a total of 208 strikeouts over 178 and two-thirds innings pitched.

With Luzardo joining, the Phillies are looking at a potentially strong starting rotation that might also include Zack Wheeler, Aaron Nola, Cristopher Sanchez, and Ranger Suarez.

Caba, who is only 19, has played 116 games in the minor leagues for the Phillies where he batted .252 with two home runs, 43 RBIs, 66 stolen bases, 95 walks, and 65 strikeouts.

Boyd, who is 21, played at High-A Jersey Shore last season and recorded a batting average of .239 with three home runs, 40 RBIs, and 27 stolen bases. His stats declined compared to 2023 when he hit .262 and swiped 56 bases at Single-A Clearwater.

As for McIntosh, who is 27 years old, he has participated in 308 games in the minor leagues. Last season, playing for Double-A Pensacola, he participated in 117 games and batted .246 with 12 home runs and 55 RBIs.

Luzardo is under contract with the club for two more years. He signed a one-year deal worth $5.5 million in January to avoid arbitration and will be eligible for arbitration again in 2025.
