Phoenix Suns describe ex-employee’s $60 million claim for discrimination and wrongful termination as ‘absurd’
Andrea Trischan, a former employee of the Phoenix Suns, is pursuing a $60 million claim for discrimination and wrongful termination with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the civil rights division of the Arizona attorney general’s office, according to a report by ESPN.
The Arizona attorney general’s office’s civil rights division is currently looking into the case.
“Ms. Trischan lodged a formal complaint due to persistent racial discrimination, harassment, and retaliation that she faced while working with the Phoenix Suns,” stated Trischan’s attorney, Sheree Wright, in the ESPN report. “In particular, Ms. Trischan suffered blatant racist remarks and a toxic workplace that remained unresolved even after being communicated to HR and upper management.”
Trischan began her role in September 2022, shortly after the NBA imposed a suspension and a $10 million fine on then-Suns team owner Robert Sarver for “workplace misconduct and organizational issues” identified during a 10-month NBA investigation spanning his 18 years as team owner.
She was appointed as the program manager for diversity, equity, and inclusion to tackle problems highlighted in the Sarver investigation but was dismissed after less than 10 months in her role.
“A former employee, who worked for the organization until 2023, was let go following a series of underperformances,” said Stacey Mitch, senior vice president of communications for the Suns and Mercury, to The Arizona Republic. “This individual has made a baseless allegation with a state agency and is currently attempting to exploit ESPN’s 2022 coverage of prior ownership to substantiate her outrageous $60 million claim against the Suns organization.”
Mat Ishbia purchased the Suns and Mercury from Sarver for a record-setting $4 billion in February 2023.
“Let it be clear, this individual is making unfounded accusations to attempt to acquire tens of millions of dollars,” Mitch further explained in her statement. “We are confident that the judicial system will dismiss these claims and swiftly resolve this issue. The Phoenix Suns and Mercury are dedicated to establishing a world-class organization for all employees. We will not allow opportunists to succeed in their efforts to manipulate the media and leverage outdated reports for financial gain.”
Trischan’s legal team has indicated they are ready to file an official lawsuit against the Suns and expect to proceed with this action. She has until November 13 to file, according to her attorneys and the ESPN report.
