Popcorn and Pups: A Guide to Sharing Snacks Safely with Your Furry Friend

Can dogs eat popcorn? Here’s how to treat your pup safely.

What’s your preferred snack?

For many, popcorn is a favorite. It’s light, fluffy, and comes in a variety of flavors, both savory and sweet.

But how about our furry friends? Can your dog enjoy some popcorn too?

While dogs can eat certain human foods, it’s important to know which ones are safe for them. So, is popcorn suitable?

Can dogs have popcorn?

Yes, dogs can eat popcorn, but it matters what type. Pet owners should check for any added ingredients before sharing popcorn with their dogs.

Plain, air-popped popcorn can serve as an occasional treat, according to the American Kennel Club.

Is popcorn safe for dogs?

According to Purina, popcorn is not harmful to dogs, but it doesn’t have major health benefits either.

Popcorn offers some nutrients like magnesium, zinc, and fiber, but it’s not a significant part of your dog’s diet since their main food should be dog food, as noted by Purina.

While you might enjoy flavored popcorn, it’s better if your dog sticks to plain. Seasonings and additives—such as butter and salt—can upset their stomach and may lead to weight gain when eaten often, warns the American Kennel Club.

Should I give popcorn to my dog?

As with any human food, popcorn should only be a small treat for dogs, as advised by Purina. Generally, treats shouldn’t exceed 10% of your pet’s total daily caloric intake.

While it’s best not to regularly share buttered popcorn with your dog, a few fallen pieces are typically fine, according to the American Kennel Club.

If you decide to give your dog some popcorn, make sure to remove any unpopped or partially popped kernels, as these can be a choking risk.
