Potential Tropical Depression May Develop in Gulf Coast This Week

A low-pressure system near Texas has an 80% likelihood of developing within the next two days.

Although there has been a break in storm activity, the 2024 hurricane season could see a resurgence with a low-pressure system near Texas and Mexico observed by forecasters on Sunday.

This low-pressure area has an 80% chance of evolving into a tropical depression within the next 48 hours. Additionally, two other systems are expected to develop with at least a 50% chance in the coming week, according to the National Hurricane Center.

On Thursday, a forecast map from the NHC displayed five distinct yellow circles, indicating potential storm development.

Although there has been a lull in tropical storms and hurricanes, experts predict that the 2024 season will be more active than average, though it is unlikely to break previous records.

Storm Tracking Updates

Western Gulf of Mexico

In the Western Gulf of Mexico, a low-pressure area is triggering increased thunderstorms and rain, as reported by the National Hurricane Center in Miami. Over the next few days, it is expected to slowly drift northwest, then north, nearing the Gulf coast of Mexico and Texas, where it could potentially develop into a tropical depression by midweek.

Residents in the storm’s predicted path should stay vigilant and keep an eye on updates.

Central Tropical Atlantic

Storms in the central tropical Atlantic are beginning to show signs of organization, according to the hurricane center. A tropical depression could form in that area over the central tropical Atlantic through Monday.

The system is projected to move westward at approximately 10 mph for the rest of the week.

There is a 40% chance of it forming in the next two days, which increases to a 60% chance within a week.

Eastern and Central Tropical Atlantic:

Another area, located 100 miles southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands off the western coast of Africa near Mauritania and Senegal, has produced scattered, disorganized showers and storms.

This system is expected to remain mostly stationary over the next couple of days with a 0% chance of developing into a tropical depression within 48 hours.

However, it may connect with a tropical wave, increasing its likelihood of becoming a tropical depression, raising its chance to 50% over the next seven days.
