Which other presidents have pardoned relatives? Trump is on the list

WASHINGTON − President Joe Biden’s recent pardon of his son, Hunter Biden, who faced federal charges related to gun possession and tax fraud, has stirred up considerable controversy, drawing criticism from Republican lawmakers and President-elect Donald Trump.

This pardon follows several months in which both the president and the White House maintained that Hunter Biden’s legal issues would not be resolved in this manner.

However, Biden is not the first president to grant a pardon to a family member. He joins a notable group of previous presidents, including Donald Trump.

Donald Trump pardoned Jared Kushner’s father

During his presidency, Donald Trump granted a pardon to Charles Kushner, the father of his son-in-law Jared Kushner. Charles was convicted in 2005 for preparing false tax returns, retaliating against a witness, and making false statements to the Federal Election Commission.

At that time, Trump noted that Charles was committed to charitable causes, which he believed outweighed his criminal conviction.

Charles Kushner’s prosecution was led by Chris Christie, who later became the governor of New Jersey and was a top ally of Trump until Jared Kushner reportedly blocked Christie’s appointment as White House chief of staff.

Now President-elect, Trump plans to appoint Charles Kushner as the next U.S. ambassador to France.
