Bad Bunny, JLo, Ricky Martin Rally Behind Harris Following Offensive Remarks About Puerto Rico at Trump Rally

Numerous celebrities are voicing their opposition to racist remarks about Puerto Rico made during a recent Trump rally.

At a campaign rally for former President Donald Trump at Madison Square Garden in New York City on Sunday, a comedian made a derogatory comment, referring to Puerto Rico as “a floating island of garbage.”

During his performance, Tony Hinchcliffe, also known as Kill Tony, stated, “There’s a lot going on. I don’t know if you know this but there’s literally a floating island of garbage in the middle of the ocean right now. I think it’s called Puerto Rico.”

Puerto Rican stars Bad Bunny, Jennifer Lopez, and Ricky Martin expressed their disapproval of these comments and showed support for Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential nominee.

Bad Bunny shared a video on Instagram displaying Harris’ commitment to enhancing Puerto Rico’s economy, which she delivered on Sunday in Philadelphia. The video, featuring Spanish subtitles, included Harris’s message to Puerto Rican voters: “There is so much at stake in this election.”

He highlighted one specific quote from Harris’s speech: “I will never forget what Donald Trump did, and what he failed to do when Puerto Rico needed a caring and competent leader. He abandoned the island, attempted to block aid following successive hurricanes and offered nothing but paper towels and insults.”

In 2017, Hurricanes Maria and Irma wreaked havoc on Puerto Rico, resulting in over 3,000 fatalities and ongoing tensions between Trump and the island’s leaders amidst discussions over federal aid.

Jennifer Lopez also shared Harris’s video and graphics outlining the campaign’s stance on Puerto Rico on her Instagram story, adding clapping emojis and the Puerto Rican flag to her posts for her 250 million followers.

Ricky Martin responded by tagging Harris on his Instagram and wrote, “I remember,” referring to her remarks about Trump’s actions regarding Puerto Rico. He also posted a clip of Hinchcliffe’s comments, conveying to his 18.5 million followers in Spanish, “This is how they view us. Vote for @kamalaharris.” Both Zoe Saldaña and Lin-Manuel Miranda shared Martin’s post.

“This is not amusing,” actress Rosie Perez remarked when sharing Hinchcliffe’s clip on her Instagram, calling it “heartbreaking and very disturbing.”

Actress Gina Rodriguez also posted the Harris clip, urging Puerto Ricans to vote: “PUERTO RICANS, WHERE ARE YOU?!? Let’s go @KAMALAHARRIS, VOTE FOR YOUR ISLAND. VOTE FOR YOURSELF.”

Other celebrities, including Niecy Nash-Betts, also reacted to the offensive comments.

Clips of Hinchcliffe’s offensive remarks about Jews, Palestinians, Black individuals, and Latinos have surfaced.

“If you identify with any group he referenced or care for anyone from those groups… PAY ATTENTION. THINGS WILL ONLY GET WORSE. #NOTMYAMERICA,” she stated.

In response to the significant criticism, including feedback from several politicians, senior adviser to Trump, Danielle Alvarez, released a statement on Sunday night regarding Hinchcliffe’s routine. “This joke doesn’t align with the viewpoints of President Trump or the campaign,” she declared.

Hinchcliffe took to X to say he cherishes Puerto Rico and has spent vacations there. He noted that during his performance, he “made fun of everyone.”

“These individuals lack a sense of humor,” he commented.

Trump, witnessing an uptick in support among Latino males, highlighted endorsements from Puerto Rican artists such as Anuel AA and Nicky Jam, who enjoy substantial followings among young Latino voters. Puerto Rican residents in the U.S. represent the second-largest Latino demographic in the nation, notably in critical swing states like Pennsylvania.
