‘SNL’ star Punkie Johnson explains her departure from the show
Punkie Johnson, known for her role on “Saturday Night Live,” has announced she will not be returning to Studio 8H, and she’s sharing the reasons behind her departure.
The 39-year-old comedian joined Dana Carvey and David Spade on their “Fly on the Wall” podcast, where she discussed her decision to leave “SNL,” which she made public earlier this month.
Johnson expressed that she felt she didn’t “really fit” in the show, indicating her stronger background in stand-up comedy compared to sketch work.
“I started in stand-up comedy, so I thought everyone came from that background too,” she noted. “But when I talked to others, they mentioned going to school for this. I was surprised to hear that!”
She described “SNL” as a “challenging job” and revealed that last season, she contemplated leaving because she didn’t feel like she belonged. However, she decided to stay on and had a “fantastic first half of the season.”
Unfortunately, she mentioned that things took a turn for the worse when Ben Silva, a writer she connected with, left the show, leading her to “spiral” emotionally.
Despite her departure, Johnson shared that she has already encountered many exciting opportunities since making her exit.
“It’s going to be a big change, but I’m looking forward to it,” she expressed. “I’m really excited. I’m working on a film that Lorne Michaels is helping me with, and I’m also putting together my own special with his support. So my connection with the show is still strong. We both realized that this wasn’t quite the right fit for me.”
Johnson first joined “SNL” as a featured player in 2020 and became a full cast member in 2022. She confirmed her exit before the show’s upcoming 50th season.
“There’s no bad feelings, no bridges burned, nothing negative,” she stated in an Instagram video.
Molly Kearney, who made history as the show’s first non-binary cast member when they joined in 2022, also announced they would not be returning this fall.
“That’s a wrap on my time with ‘SNL’!” Kearney posted on Instagram. “Reflecting on the amazing two seasons I spent on this show has been a dream come true. I am incredibly thankful for this chapter in my life and all the talented individuals behind the scenes who create the magic each week. So many bald caps, so little time.”
Maya Rudolph is set to reprise her role as Vice President Kamala Harris on “SNL” this fall as the presidential election approaches, while Steve Martin has opted out of the race to portray Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz after many fans suggested him for the part.
“SNL” is set to kick off its 50th season on September 28.
