Tennis icon Rafael Nadal announces retirement following Davis Cup Finals

PARIS — Rafa Nadal from Spain, who has claimed 22 Grand Slam singles titles, announced on Thursday that he will retire following the Davis Cup Finals, marking the end of a remarkable tennis career.

“These last couple of years have been quite challenging, particularly the past two,” stated the 38-year-old, who holds the record for the most French Open titles with 14, in a video message.

“I am thrilled that my final tournament will be the Davis Cup as I represent my country. It’s a full circle moment since one of my first memorable experiences was the final in Sevilla in 2004.”

The knockout rounds of the Davis Cup are scheduled from November 19-24.

Nadal’s professional journey has been plagued by injuries, causing him to miss the 2023 French Open and suffer an early exit against Germany’s Alexander Zverev this year.

The renowned ‘King of Clay’ last won the Roland Garros title in 2022, finishing his career at this venue with an impressive 112-4 win-loss record.

In the past two seasons, Nadal participated in only 23 matches.

He will retire two years after his longtime rival Roger Federer, leaving Serbian 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic as the only active member of the ‘Big Three’.

Earlier that same day, fellow competitor and Frenchman Richard Gasquet announced that he will also retire after next year’s French Open.

Nadal expressed gratitude towards his family and team for their support throughout his illustrious career, especially acknowledging his uncle Toni, who was his coach for the majority of his time on the court.

“I credit him with helping me overcome many tough circumstances throughout my career,” Nadal shared.

To his supporters, Nadal expressed, “I can’t express enough gratitude for the feelings you’ve given me. Everything I experienced has felt like a wonderful dream.”

“I leave with complete peace of mind knowing that I gave it my all,” he added.

Having declined any farewell event after his first-round exit at the French Open earlier this year, Nadal is now set to receive what is expected to be an emotional tribute at Roland Garros next year.
