Raheem Morris downplays Kyle Pitts’ zero-catch game: ‘Stats are for losers’
The Atlanta Falcons anticipated that a change in coaching staff would reinvigorate tight end Kyle Pitts and lead to a standout season for him.
However, after four weeks into the 2024 NFL season, that has yet to materialize.
Pitts experienced the least effective game of his career during the Falcons’ 26-24 victory over the New Orleans Saints in Week 4. This was the first instance where the 23-year-old registered zero receptions, even with Kirk Cousins attempting 35 passes.
Making matters more concerning for Pitts’ future in Atlanta, head coach Raheem Morris appeared unfazed by Pitts’ lack of engagement when asked if he aimed to incorporate him more into the offensive strategy.
“He had a couple of targets today. We had a few plays in that direction,” Morris explained to the press after the game. “For me, stats don’t matter. That’s not what I focus on.”
What truly matters to Morris is securing victories, particularly in rivalry games.
“The goal is to win every game,” Morris stated. “And we were able to do that today.”
With this win, Atlanta climbs to second place in the NFC South, holding the tiebreaker over the Saints.
Whether the Falcons can maintain their winning streak without featuring Pitts prominently in their strategy remains to be seen. Cousins appears to have strong connections with wide receivers Drake London and Darnell Mooney early in the season. Pitts possesses the size and athletic ability that make him a potential threat in the middle of the field, as shown by his impressive 1,026-yard rookie season in 2020, indicating he can be a significant contributor.
Pitts did not express his thoughts on his role after the game, though it’s hard to believe he’s satisfied with his performance thus far. Over four games this season, he has only 8 receptions for 105 yards and one touchdown, having been targeted just 15 times by Cousins.
