MotorTrend Names the Ram 1500 as 2025 Truck of the Year
This year, all three winners of the Golden Calipers are unexpected champions. They each faced stiff competition from more glamorous and attention-grabbing rivals. While some of the competitors included an innovative electric truck with impressive range and features, a rugged and durable bullet-resistant EV, and new versions of popular midsize trucks, thorough testing exposed their shortcomings. In contrast, the newly upgraded 2025 Ram 1500 lineup shone brightly in our evaluations.
To showcase what’s new for 2025, Ram provided three distinct trucks: the budget-friendly, off-road capable Warlock based on the Tradesman model; a high-output version of the SST Hurricane engine, which replaces the Hemi; and two luxury offerings — the RHO and Tungsten models. The RHO boasts high performance with a 540-hp engine, taking the place of the previous TRX, while the Tungsten is a new high-end model introduced above the Limited and Limited Longhorn versions. Moreover, both the Limited and Tungsten now feature the powerful engine shared with the RHO.
Remarkable Engineering
The introduction of the new engine model initially caused concerns among traditional truck enthusiasts. However, extensive testing has clearly shown that this newer, more sophisticated engine outperforms the older Hemi variant. In comparative tests with similar Laramie 4×4 crew cabs, the standard-output SST engine demonstrates a 1.6-second advantage in reaching 60 mph compared to the previous 5.7 V-8. The high-output version offers an even greater edge, speeding up to 60 mph in 2.2 seconds faster. While the RHO may not be as fast as the TRX, it falls just 0.7 seconds short, making it a much more practical daily driver.
A key aspect of this performance improvement lies in the vehicle’s weight; the lightweight all-aluminum engine is less than the heavier iron-block V-8s it replaces. Additionally, the placement of the turbos behind the axle helps give the truck a lighter feel despite adding length. The standard output engine is about 50 pounds lighter than the 5.7-liter V-8, while the high-output SST is approximately 150 pounds lighter than the 6.2-liter supercharged V-8. This weight difference noticeably enhances the RHO’s handling when compared to the TRX, although some editors noted that the steering ratio could be improved.
Unlike the previous Hellcat engine, the SST engine suits the luxury of the Limited model remarkably well. “It’s as if the engine and transmission are fitted in a luxury car,” noted deputy editor Alexander Stoklosa. “They react quickly when you need power and are completely quiet otherwise, providing a smooth drive thanks to seamless torque shifts.”
The new vehicle features also include Hands-Free Active Driving Assist, which rivals GM’s Super Cruise and Ford’s BlueCruise. This system, usable on approximately 125,000 miles of well-marked divided roads, performed reasonably well during tests on Michigan highways. The system’s bright green indicators show when it’s engaged, and although it’s not flawless, we found it effective in our experience, ranking just shy of its competitors. Currently, this feature is standard on the Tungsten model and can be added in packages costing between $3,315 and $9,995 for higher trims, which includes three years of service, with the cost for ongoing subscription yet to be determined.
In 2025, Ram enhances passenger comfort with the segment’s first 10.3-inch passenger screen, alongside the existing vertical 14.5-inch display, a 12.3-inch digital cluster, and a 10.0-inch head-up display. Passengers can access the truck’s camera views, navigation, onboard data, or stream media while the driver remains focused. We found even the basic screen in the Warlock offers more informative content than larger screens in competitors like Toyota, and we appreciated the dedicated hard button for home, making it easier than searching for an icon on a phone-mirroring display.
This update would be incomplete without mentioning features such as the phone-as-key capability, dual wireless charging stations, and the Tungsten’s impressive 1,228-watt, 23-speaker Klipsch Reference Premiere sound system. This brand’s first automotive application impressed senior technical editor Matt Chudzinski, who deemed it “the best in any truck to date,” citing the surround sound experience as truly immersive rather than just enjoyable.
point to the direction from which a specific sound originates.” Technical writer Jered Korfhage expressed his amazement: “I swear my hair lifted during one of the bass-heavy tracks.”
Functionality Performance
Trucks are designed to meet a myriad of diverse requirements, such as towing, hauling, off-road adventures, daily driving, and city outings. These three Ram models effectively cover this broad spectrum, showcasing just a portion of the truck’s extensive variety.
Ram is making strides against Ford’s dominance in towing capabilities with a new reverse steering aid for trailers. This system self-calibrates without any programming or sticky notes. It enables the driver to maneuver the trailer using a knob, featuring a Push-to-Center function that helps the truck follow the trailer straight back once it’s aligned. This technology is included in the $1,345 Trailer-Tow package available on the Tradesman trim and higher. The corner radar units automatically assess the trailer’s length, adjusting the blind-spot alerts accordingly. When properly equipped, the Ram can assist with trailer alignment and monitor tire pressure; digital camera mirrors, standard side-view mirrors with parabolic inserts, and specialized trailering mirrors are also available for added convenience.
The maximum trailer weight ratings range from 6,370 to 11,600 pounds. We attached a 6,870-pound Mastercraft XT22 T wake boat to our Tungsten (which is 75 percent of its rated maximum). Several editors mentioned that this truck towed with greater ease than any others tested. The air suspension made hitching up simple — just lower it all the way down, back under the hitch, and raise it again. It manages load leveling effortlessly, and the dampers received praise for effectively absorbing road bumps. The SST propelled this load to highway speeds smoothly, revving slightly higher than the V-8s typically do. When in Tow/Haul mode, it seems to hold lower gears during highway driving, possibly at the expense of fuel economy. It’s unfortunate that features like Highway Drive Assist or other lane-keeping systems are unavailable while towing. (This is currently exclusive to Super Cruise.)
For hauling purposes, the 2025 Ram 1500 has a carrying capacity between 1,190 and 2,360 pounds. We loaded 1,000 pounds into our Warlock and were pleasantly surprised that it handled even smoother while still managing well. The RamBox option remains, offering side storage compartments, a box divider, and a cargo extender as a $995 addition on 5-foot-7-inch beds starting from Big Horn. Tailgate choices include power release, power down and up, along with a side-hinged barn-door or drop-down-capable Multifunctional Tailgate ($1,095 on Big Horn and above). A retractable corner bed step makes climbing aboard easier, where you’ll find the usual fixed and adjustable tie-downs.
Ram has a long-standing reputation for off-roading capabilities, and for 2025, it offers either a limited-slip or electronically locking rear differential, available as standard or optional on every model. The Ram Classic’s Warlock package now joins the main 1500 lineup, featuring blacked-out trims and popular options, along with a 1-inch suspension lift, Bilstein shocks, skid plates, and a locking rear axle. Priced at $56,255, it offers a significant discount of $9,935 on the Rebel’s performance. Among the more comfortable trucks we drove at Holly Oaks ORV Park, the Warlock absorbed impacts well, though its softer suspension allowed some bottoming out. Technical writer Jered Korfhage appreciated its refreshing lack of drive modes and the choice of snow-rated Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac tires, observing it “sacrifices very little in off-road conditions.”
However, it’s really the RHO that excels here, and we generally enjoyed its powerful sound and improved steering response compared to the TRX. Korfhage noted the Bilsteins’ ability to handle significant jolts without bottoming out, and many remarked on how much lighter, more agile, and rear-torque-biased the RHO felt. Senior editor Jason Gonderman mentioned his only grievances were that “the off-road camera views don’t stay active, and their low resolution makes them almost unusable.”
Whether commuting or embarking on long trips, the Ram 1500 stands out. All cabin styles, from the Warlock to the Tungsten, are quieter than any competitor with a running engine, and visibility is exceptional. Power pedal adjustments and A-pillar grab handles cater to different body types, ensuring all versions ride more smoothly than virtually any other truck available. Deputy editor Alexander Stoklosa was impressed by how seamlessly the truck “flows down the road. Even Jeep’s Grand Wagoneers don’t drive this well, and this is a truck. With a live rear axle.” Furthermore, the Tungsten, equipped with 24-way-adjustable seats and five massage settings, clearly reigns supreme among half-ton luxury trucks.
Design Innovations
The only notable advancement in the design of the 2025 Ram 1500 is the integration of the Tungsten model’s front bumper beam behind a soft fascia, similar to car designs. All other models (and their competitors) typically use a separate painted or chromed metal bumper. At first glance, you might not even notice this change, but it eliminates an unsightly gap around the nose below the grille and allows the front wheel-lip moldings to extend down to the chin spoiler. This method gives the vehicle a well-tailored and upscale appearance, which should ideally not raise insurance costs.
The Tungsten model truly elevates truck interior luxury. Ram has consistently set a high standard, and this new variant raises the bar once more. It features intricately woven carbon-fiber accents and extensive stitching on the dashboard, doors, seats, and console. Additionally, there’s the Tungsten badge on the center console, showcasing an outstanding level of craftsmanship that Chudzinski suggested that it “might serve as a replacement for an engagement ring.”
Efficiency
The decision to replace V-8 engines with twin-turbo six-cylinder engines was primarily aimed at enhancing fuel efficiency. However, the benefits for standard trucks are somewhat limited. On highways, efficiency is improved by 9 percent, but in urban settings, rear-drive models yield similar results, while 4x4s show a 6 percent decline, meaning the overall ratings see little change. In contrast, when compared to the TRX, the RHO boasts a 40 percent improvement in city driving, a 14 percent enhancement on highways, and a 25 percent increase in combined ratings.
Importantly, though, the base SST outperforms the Chevrolet Silverado’s 5.3-liter V-8 by 12 to 17 percent, and the Ford F-150’s 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 and 5.0-liter V-8 perform slightly worse. The RHO is competitive with the ZR2 Bison, slightly trailing the Raptor but significantly outperforming the Raptor R. Additionally, the mild hybrid 3.6-liter Pentastar eTorque V-6 remains a strong choice for the Ram 1500 lineup, achieving 5 percent better performance than Ford’s 2.7-liter V-6 and 16 to 17 percent better than Chevy’s 2.7-liter I-4 in combined ratings, ensuring Ram’s competitiveness as it approaches the launch of its electric models.
Safety
Safety may be one of Ram’s weaker points. While the IIHS has not yet tested the 2025 Ram model, the NHTSA did evaluate it and awarded four stars for frontal and rollover crash safety, and five stars for side impact, with the overall ratings being five stars for crew cabs and four stars for quad cabs. In comparison, both Chevrolet and Ford received five stars for frontal crashworthiness across all tested models.
Value
Ram offers a variety of options to fit different budgets and needs with a 10-model lineup for 2025 — this is prior to the introduction of the REV electric and Ramcharger EREV models. After testing several models, we were impressed with each one’s unique character. Many agreed with Korfhage, who stated that the Warlock is “the best value truck available.” Similarly, we found the $89,070 Tungsten model to be worthy of its price due to its remarkably quiet and smooth ride, extensive features, and high-quality materials. The overall feeling was that, despite a price gap of $50,000, these Rams provide good value for the money.
After undergoing a week of thorough instrumented testing and another week spent evaluating this year’s models, it was clear that none of the highly praised newcomers outperformed their respective competitors across one of our six essential criteria. However, the Ram excelled amongst the half-ton category, leading to a nearly unanimous choice for our 2025 Truck of the Year.
