Art Evans, star of ‘A Soldier’s Story’ and ‘Die Hard 2,’ dies at 82

Art Evans, an actor recognized for his roles in “A Soldier’s Story” and “Die Hard 2,” has passed away at the age of 82.

His agents, LyNea Bell and Charleen McGuire, confirmed his death on Saturday in a statement sent to YSL News on Sunday. The actor succumbed to complications arising from diabetes, a health issue he had been facing for several years.

“Art was not only a phenomenal actor but also a loving husband, friend, and a ray of positivity to everyone around him,” his wife, Babe Evans, shared in a statement through his representatives. “His joy, enthusiasm, and zest for life will be sorely missed. Though we are saddened by his passing, we celebrate the joy and inspiration he provided during his life.”

Details regarding the memorial services for Evans will be shared soon, as indicated by Bell and McGuire.

Arthur James Evans was born in Berkeley, California, and he began his acting career with a leading role in the James Baldwin play “The Amen Corner,” which was staged at Frank Silvera’s Theater of Being in Los Angeles before moving to Broadway in 1965.

Following several uncredited roles in films during the early 1970s, Evans secured a leading part in the television film “The Orphan and the Dude,” where he portrayed Curtis “The Dude” Brown in 1975, according to his IMDb page.

Throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s, Evans featured in a variety of television shows and movies, including “Leadbelly” (1976), “Youngblood” (1978), “M*A*S*H” (1979), “The Fall Guy” (1983), and “Hill Street Blues” (1981-1984).

Evans gained prominence in 1984 when he appeared in the critically acclaimed war film “A Soldier’s Story,” playing the role of the sycophantic Private Wilkie alongside Howard E. Rollins Jr. and Adolph Caesar. The movie received three Academy Award nominations in 1985, including nods for Best Picture.

The next year, Evans was part of the ensemble cast of the sitcom “Nine to Five,” adapted from the popular film featuring Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, and Dolly Parton. He was part of the show from 1986 to 1988, alongside Rachel Parton George, Rita Moreno, and Sally Struthers.

Evans also left a mark in cinema with his role in “Die Hard 2,” where he played Barnes, an employee in the air traffic control tower who assists John McClane, portrayed by Bruce Willis.

Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Evans continued to work actively, appearing in popular TV shows such as “Doogie Howser, M.D.” (1990), “Family Matters” (1994), “Walker, Texas Ranger” (1996), “The X-Files” (2000), and “Monk” (2006).

“Art was an extraordinary talent who impacted many lives through his performances. His presence will be greatly missed by all who knew him,” stated Bell and McGuire. “Art’s impact will forever be remembered.”

Evans’ last role was a short voiceover performance in the Disney+ animated series “The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder,” which aired in 2022 and 2023, according to IMDb.

He is survived by his wife Babe and their son, Ogadae.
