Richard Simmons’ Final Days: Fitness Icon Chose to Stay Home for His Birthday Instead of Seeking Medical Help

New details regarding Richard Simmons’ death have emerged.

The day before his passing on July 13, Simmons, who was a cherished fitness figure, chose to postpone medical attention after collapsing at home because he wanted to celebrate his 76th birthday there, as reported by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Department and reviewed by YSL News.

The findings come from a month-long inquiry into the cause of Simmons’ death, which included witness testimonies, law enforcement interviews, an autopsy, and lab analysis.

The medical examiner ruled Simmons’ death an accident, stating that he died from “sequelae of blunt traumatic injuries” — complications related to injuries — and noted “arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease” as a contributing factor in the report.

Richard Simmons Stayed in Bed Following a Fall

Witness statements included in the report indicate that Simmons felt dizzy after a visit to the restroom and fell on the evening of July 11. His caregiver found him on the floor the next morning at approximately 9:30 a.m. and, with the help of his housekeeper, assisted Simmons into bed. There are no indications of foul play.

“He declined to seek medical help as he wished to celebrate his birthday (July 12) at home and agreed to pursue medical attention the following morning (July 13),” the report noted.

He reportedly spent his birthday resting in bed. Simmons’ secretary observed that his speech appeared slurred. His caregiver remained with him until about 10 p.m. on July 12, allowing him to rest before agreeing to seek medical assistance. The following morning, around 9:30 a.m., his caregiver found him unresponsive in his bedroom.

The autopsy revealed multiple bruises and scrapes on Simmons’ body, alongside a broken left femur.

The details in the report align with what Teresa Reveles, Simmons’ house manager for 35 years, shared with People magazine last month.

Reveles recounted that she was introduced to Simmons through an agency back in 1986.

“I arrived and Richard said to me, ‘Where are your clothes? Where is your big suitcase?’ I replied, ‘I just brought a small suitcase because I’m only trying this for two weeks. If you don’t like me or my cooking, then I can’t stay,’” Reveles remembered. However, Simmons responded, “Teresa, come in, you’re never going to leave. We’ll be together until I die.”

She added, “And you know what? His wish came true. He somehow knew this.”

Reveles discovered Simmons in his bedroom after his passing, describing that he appeared peaceful. The previous day, he had mentioned experiencing significant leg pain.

Reflecting on Simmons’ withdrawal from the public eye in his later years, Reveles noted that Simmons sought to escape the limelight due to health concerns and worries about his physical appearance, facing knee pain and feeling that he looked too old.

In the days leading up to his death, Simmons seemed to be in good spirits, according to Reveles. She mentioned he was communicating with fans through calls and emails and was even writing a Broadway musical about his life.
