Rihanna Claps Back at Voting Joke Critics: “Where Were You on January 6?”

Rihanna responds to critics of her illegal voting joke: ‘What about January 6?’

Although Rihanna cannot cast her vote in the 2024 election, she is encouraging her fans to head to the polls for her.

In an Instagram post on Monday, the “Umbrella” artist, who hails from Barbados, humorously stated that her inability to vote stems from her status as a non-U.S. citizen.

She shared a video with the caption: “POV: me trying to sneak into the polls with my son’s passport #votecauseicant,” as she peered out from a car window.

While some followers took offense to the Grammy-winning star’s joke about illegal voting, she swiftly defended herself against the backlash.

One Instagram user expressed their stance on “wanting to secure the border” and advised Rihanna to “stick to music,” claiming that “celebrities shouldn’t share their political views.”

Rihanna fired back by referencing the supporters of former President Donald Trump who stormed the Capitol on January 6, 2021, attempting to disrupt the certification of President Joe Biden’s election victory.

“Where were you on January 6, sis?” Rihanna retorted.

Another follower maintained that “illegal voting is a crime” and suggested she should be “prosecuted for attempting it,” to which she replied, “Shut up Karen.”

When yet another commenter questioned why she should “be allowed to” vote “if she isn’t a legal citizen,” she labeled the user as “illiterate.”

Responding to a user who claimed to vote for “closed borders, deportations, and avoiding foreign conflicts,” Rihanna criticized them along with “the America you dream of.”

Other fans joined in, praising Rihanna’s sharp comebacks. “These replies? Oh she’s truly back,” one comment exclaimed.

Even though Rihanna can’t vote herself, she has been a strong advocate for political participation among her fans. In 2018, she urged her followers to make their voices heard in the midterm elections, stating on Instagram that Election Day is “the most significant day for the rest of your lives,” and if they are “fed up with the state of the country and government, get up and do something about it!!!”

When someone had inquired if she was a U.S. citizen back then, Rihanna responded, “Nah I’m an immigrant trying to help your country.”

In 2021, Rihanna was honored as a national hero in her home country of Barbados. “This is a day I will never forget,” she said during the ceremony, adding, “There’s nothing that compares to being acknowledged in the land where you grew up.”
