Rising to the Top: New No. 1 Emerges Following Texas’ Week 8 Defeat in College Football

Who will be the new No. 1? US LBM Coaches Poll Predictions After Texas’ Loss in College Football’s Week 8

Texas took the place of Georgia, but after Georgia’s triumph, the Longhorns fell from grace. Now, Oregon is likely to ascend to the top of the US LBM Coaches Poll for the first time since 2012.

Following their exciting victory over Ohio State last week, the Ducks were ranked No. 2 and are set to take over the top position after Georgia’s 30-15 win against Texas. The only other undefeated team in contention is Penn State, though it’s unlikely they will garner significant first-place votes from the Coaches Poll committee.

Georgia’s claim to the top spot is strengthened by their decisive win over the previously unbeaten Longhorns, yet the Bulldogs’ earlier loss to Alabama looks worse now due to Alabama’s struggles in October.

Alabama is expected to drop in the rankings after their loss to Tennessee. This marks the first time since 2007, which was former coach Nick Saban’s first season, that the Tide has two losses before November.

With Oregon taking the lead, here’s what the Coaches Poll is expected to look like when the new Top 25 is unveiled later today:

1. Oregon (7-0)

The Ducks had an effortless 35-0 victory over Purdue on Friday night. It’s interesting to see how Oregon has adapted to Big Ten competition, especially compared to the three other former Pac-12 teams: Washington, Southern California, and UCLA, which have a combined record of 4-10 in conference games.

2. Georgia (6-1)

The victory over Texas showcased how commanding Georgia can be when playing effectively. They’ve not always performed at this level throughout the season, particularly when they fell significantly behind Alabama. However, their thorough victory over the Longhorns indicates that Georgia could indeed be one of the nation’s top teams, as anticipated in the preseason.

3. Penn State (6-0)

After a week off, the Nittany Lions are set for an intriguing away game against Wisconsin. The Badgers have found their stride with three consecutive convincing wins against Purdue, Rutgers, and Northwestern. Therefore, Penn State must stay focused and not overlook their upcoming notable matchup with Ohio State in early November.

4. Texas (6-1)

This ranking feels appropriate for Texas. They are positioned behind the unbeaten leaders from the Big Ten and Georgia, reflecting their dominance during their impressive six-game winning streak at the start of the season. However, the reality is that their strength of schedule has been lacking, with Michigan being their top victory, followed by Oklahoma.

5. Ohio State (5-1)

It’s unfortunate for Nebraska, which suffered a 56-7 defeat to Indiana. The Cornhuskers are the next challenge for Ohio State, who will be looking to overcome their previous loss at Oregon. Expect OSU to take their frustrations out on Nebraska.

6. Miami (7-0)

In an ideal scenario, Miami’s unbeaten record would at least place them ahead of two one-loss teams. Unfortunately, their series of narrow victories in the ACC may hinder voters from ranking the Hurricanes higher than No. 6. However, a strong showing against Clemson could provide them with a signature win in the conference.

7. Tennessee (6-1)

After beating Alabama, the Volunteers are likely to jump three spots from last week’s ranking, putting them ahead of LSU, who had a solid 34-10 win over Arkansas. Clemson, which was No. 9 last week, also had a convincing win against Virginia. While Tennessee’s performance hasn’t been flawless, they are just a game away from being undefeated and possibly the No. 1 team.

8. LSU (6-1)

A 24-point victory over Arkansas is noteworthy considering their past encounters, where three of the last four games were decided by just a field goal. This win seemed to follow that trend early on before LSU started to break away in the second half. Winning after the emotional victory against Mississippi the week before adds to the significance of this win.

9. Clemson (6-1)

The Tigers have been scoring an impressive average of 41.2 points per game, except for their season opener against Georgia where they only managed a field goal. Since then, their average shoots up to 48.5 points, including a high of 66 points against Appalachian State. While they may not be in the limelight, Clemson is looking increasingly like a serious contender for the national championship.

10. Notre Dame (6-1)

Notre Dame has steadily climbed back into the rankings. Initially placed No. 7 in the preseason, they maintained that spot after defeating Texas A&M but dropped to No. 19 following a loss to Northern Illinois. From there, they improved to No. 18, then No. 14, and now No. 12. Following their win against Georgia Tech, the Fighting Irish are likely to move up a position from their previous ranking of No. 11.
