What fans didn’t expect was an Oscar-nominated personality to be part of the commentary team.

Rosie Perez, an acclaimed actress and choreographer, is also a passionate boxing fan. She has shared that her love for the sport began at a young age. Here’s a closer look at Perez’s boxing enthusiasm and her role as a commentator.

Who is Rosie Perez?

Perez has made her mark as both an actress and choreographer, collaborating with many renowned figures in music and film. Her most notable achievement was receiving an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress in 1993 for her role in “Fearless,” ultimately losing to Anna Paquin who starred in “The Piano.” She was also nominated for a Golden Globe for the same performance.

In 2021, Perez garnered an Emmy nomination for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her performance in “The Flight Attendant.”

In addition to acting, Perez has choreographed numerous music videos and performances for illustrious artists like Janet Jackson, Bobby Brown, and LL Cool J. She has received three Emmy nominations (1990, 1992, 1993) for her choreography on “In Living Color.”

Rosie Perez’s Age

Perez is currently 60 years old, having been born on September 6, 1964, in Brooklyn, New York.

Perez’s Expertise and Passion for Boxing

Perez’s love for boxing emerged at a young age, although she felt compelled to keep it under wraps for many years. In a recent dialogue with Mike Tyson, she mentioned that she often downplayed her passion for the sport as people would question how she could support such a “barbaric sport.”

Nevertheless, her fondness for boxing never waned. In 2018, she shared with the New York Times, “It was a cultural thing.” She elaborated, “Growing up Puerto Rican, watching boxing felt like a norm. We enjoyed baseball too, but boxing had a special impact on me as a kid, and it still does.”

Perez can often be found at ringside during various boxing events in New York. After being bullied in her youth, she took up boxing herself. “I started boxing because I frequently got bullied, and I was resilient. I’d always try to fight back,” she revealed to The Guardian in 2022. Although she continues to train, she no longer participates in fights.

Her affection for boxing has earned her the title “The First Lady of Boxing.”

Who is joining Rosie Perez to commentate the Tyson vs. Paul fight?

Perez will be joined by Canadian commentator Mauro Ranallo, known for his engaging play-by-play style, and former heavyweight champion Roy Jones Jr., who fought Tyson in a 2020 exhibition match. Amir Tyson, Mike Tyson’s son, will serve as a ringside reporter.

Additionally, British sportscaster Kate Scott will take on the role of main host, while former boxing champion Andre Ward will provide analysis from the booth, and Ariel Helwani will act as a reporter.
