Russell Simmons faces claims of owing $8M from sexual assault settlements
Russell Simmons, the prominent music executive, is reported to owe more than $8 million in undisclosed settlement agreements, as stated by three women who have accused him of sexual assault.
Legal representatives for the women—Toni Sallie, Alexia Jones, and Tina Klein-Baker—submitted affidavits this month asserting that Simmons has defaulted on over $8 million in settlements, along with accrued interest, according to documents from the New York Supreme Court accessed by YSL News on Friday.
The women allege that Simmons, who denies any misconduct, reached settlement agreements in 2023 and paid an initial amount but has since ceased payments. It is alleged that he owes Sallie $2,940,000 with an additional 20% annual interest, Jones $190,000 plus 20% annual interest, and Klein-Baker $4,950,000.
YSL News has contacted Simmons’ representative for a response.
The settlement papers do not specify the exact accusations against Simmons. However, during a CBS News interview in 2020, Jones mentioned that he assaulted her on their first date in 1991.
“He raped me right up against the (expletive) wall. Excuse my language … that’s what he did. I had to keep this secret,” she tearfully recounted.
Jones elaborated: “This was an extremely quick assault, and I remember thinking, ‘Why?’ Because I was attracted to Russell. I would have been happy with just a kiss. I would have—he didn’t need to force himself on me.”
In a 2017 article by the New York Times, Klein-Baker, a singer, accused Simmons of assaulting her in the early 1990s while he was her manager, while Sallie, a music journalist, claimed he assaulted her in his Manhattan apartment during the late 1980s.
Sallie’s settlement mentions “alleged personal physical injuries or ailments, including emotional distress and mental suffering stemming from the alleged physical injuries.” Klein-Baker’s settlement appears to be confidential.
Over the years, Simmons has faced accusations of sexual assault from several women, including Drew Dixon, a former executive at Def Jam. He has denied that any of these encounters were non-consensual but stepped away from his business roles as allegations grew in 2017. Since then, Simmons has moved to Bali, Indonesia, a country that does not have an extradition treaty with the U.S.
