Google may face a larger penalty from Russia
The legal action against Google started in 2020 after the company removed channels linked to Yevgeny Prigozhin, the leader of the Wagner Group mercenaries, and oligarch Konstantin Malofeev, both of whom have close ties to President Putin, as reported by NBC News. Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, YouTube’s decision to ban additional channels led to an expansion of this case and an increase in fines.
According to a report by RBC, Google’s Russian subsidiary, Google LLC, declared bankruptcy in June 2022. The court officially recognized this bankruptcy in November 2023.
To prevent additional financial penalties, Google must reactivate the YouTube channels within a nine-month period. If they fail to do so, they will incur a daily fine of 100,000 rubles (approximately $1,000), as reported by RBC. This penalty increases if the situation continues unresolved.
Every week, until Google follows the order, there is no cap on the fines imposed, according to reports.
