Sabrina Carpenter adds charm and vibrancy to her delightful concert experience

BALTIMORE – If a new live-action “Cinderella” were ever made, the leading lady is already here.

Sabrina Carpenter, now the queen of pop after a decade in the spotlight, embodies the essence of Disney royalty.

With her cascading blond curls, playful charm, and enchanting voice, Carpenter, 25, seamlessly fills any gaps in the pop genre with her well-crafted songs that carry a hint of spice.

This past Saturday, Carpenter entertained a packed CFG Bank Arena for the eighth stop of her Short n’ Sweet Tour, her first arena tour that will keep her performing through November.

Structured like a ’70s variety show, complete with onscreen messages stating “filmed in front of a live studio audience” and a cheeky warning of “parental discretion is advised” before the cheeky “Bed Chem,” the performance is a fun blend of a Barbie Dreamhouse and a “Three’s Company” episode.

Her visually appealing “penthouse,” as she referred to it, featured glossy white staircases, a cozy corner draped with sheer curtains for her four-piece band and a bathroom adorned with a heart-shaped mirror where she sang “Sharpest Tool.”

Sabrina Carpenter hosts an onstage pajama party

Carpenter kicked off the 90-minute spectacle with a trio of tracks from her latest sixth album, “Short n’ Sweet,” beginning with the hit single “Taste.” She cleverly played her role as she dashed onto the stage, wide-eyed and purportedly dressed only in a bath towel, quickly revealing her shiny leotard and garters underneath.

The arena radiated with pink, reminiscent of a cotton candy factory, as young fans in glittery dresses were lifted by their fathers and twentysomethings in frilly skirts joined in – all embracing the feminine vibe that Carpenter embodies.

“Good morning, Baltimore,” she exclaimed, playfully nodding to “Hairspray” and frequently engaging with her audience throughout the performance while hosting an onstage pajama party.

Carpenter’s group of female dancers hung out on a staircase while she performed “Lie to Girls,” complete with thoughtful expressions and airy vocals, as she strutted down the catwalk for a jazzy version of “Feather.”

Sabrina Carpenter channels Madonna

“This is the most enjoyable experience for me,” Carpenter shared with the audience, praising them for their enthusiastic reactions.

It remained unclear whether she was talking about performing in general or the special highlight that came next.

Carpenter created a relaxed atmosphere at the heart-shaped tip of the catwalk, with plush pillows for her band members and dancers to lounge on.

“Coincidence,” a catchy pop tune, shimmered with delightful energy. She followed this with a much-anticipated cover song, selected through a spin-the-bottle game – Madonna’s “Material Girl.” The song perfectly matched Carpenter’s vocal style and persona. “Sing along if you know it!” she encouraged the audience, which surprisingly, despite their youthful appearance, sang along joyfully (the lyrics even appeared on-screen for a karaoke-like experience).

Sabrina Carpenter gets emotional in concert

The final segment of the performance showcased Carpenter’s latest hit songs and a track from “Short n’ Sweet” titled “Juno.” The lyric “have you ever tried this one?” inspired Carpenter to present creative dance moves at each show, and on this occasion, a one-legged pose brought the crowd to a frenzy.

Before concluding with her popular song “Espresso,” a thrilling burst of pop accompanied by a shower of confetti, Carpenter took a moment to bond with her fans. As she admired their outfits, she became visibly emotional, covering her mouth as she fought back tears of gratitude.

This year has been a remarkable journey for Carpenter, transitioning from her role in Disney Channel’s “Girl Meets World” (2014-2017) as she evolved from a moderate pop artist (with the 2022 album “Emails I Can’t Send”) to one of the brightest stars in the industry.

It really is a tale reminiscent of Cinderella.
