Sailor Battles Hurricane Milton, Faces Arrest in Tampa

‘Lt. Dan,’ famous for braving Hurricane Milton on his sailboat, has been arrested

The individual known for his decision to face Hurricane Milton on his sailboat, gaining internet notoriety as “Lt. Dan,” has been taken into custody in Florida, as reported by law enforcement.

Joe Malinowski, 54, was held in Hillsborough County on Saturday after being arrested the previous day due to charges of missing a court appearance related to earlier cases and trespassing in a city park despite being instructed to leave, according to Tampa Police Department spokesperson Verliz Williams.

Listed as a “TikTok star” in arrest records, Malinowski was at the Bayshore Linear Park and Dock on Thursday when police approached him. He informed officers that he didn’t have “an accessible marine sanitation device on his unregistered boat and lacked documentation for appropriate waste disposal, posing a public health risk.”

Marine sanitation devices are essential for dealing with sewage on boats that come equipped with toilets, as mandated by the Clean Water Act, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

Malinowski was asked to vacate the park, but he was arrested the following morning for remaining on the premises, Williams stated.

The charges regarding failure to appear relate to incidents involving an unregistered vehicle and driving without a valid license, as indicated in the arrest records.

No attorney was listed in court documents to provide representation for Malinowski.

The nickname “Lt. Dan” is inspired by a character from the film “Forrest Gump,” who also faced a hurricane on a boat. Malinowski is similarly notable for having lost his lower left leg.

Earlier this month, Malinowski ignored officials’ warnings to evacuate the Tampa Bay area and chose to remain on his 22-foot sailboat during Hurricane Milton, which struck the region, causing destruction and claiming more than two dozen lives. Although authorities claimed he had been rescued and taken to safety, reporters later discovered he had returned to his boat soon after.

“It wasn’t too bad,” Malinowski stated after the storm passed. Tampa managed to avoid severe storm surges when Milton hit just south of the bay.
