Salt Life Announces Closure of 28 Stores Following Liquidation Sales

Salt Life to shut down 28 stores across the country post-liquidation sales

Salt Life, a retailer specializing in outdoor apparel and accessories, has revealed plans to close several stores following the start of liquidation sales on September 20.

Since its establishment in 2003, Salt Life has marketed itself as a provider of “everything you need for a day, a week, or even a lifetime of enjoying an active lifestyle focused on water activities,” according to their website.

“Whether you are by the ocean or just dreaming about it, Salt Life has what you need,” the brand stated.

The announcement regarding the closure of 28 locations was issued on Tuesday. The outdoor apparel company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on June 30, as per legal documents submitted in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware.

This decision follows the company’s acquisition by Iconix International Inc. and Hilco Consumer-Retail Group in a bankruptcy auction, previously owned by Delta Apparel from Duluth, Georgia.

“The acquisition, secured in a competitive bankruptcy auction, encompasses the brand along with its associated assets,” the press release stated. “Hilco will assist Iconix in shifting the Salt Life brand towards a stronger emphasis on wholesale and online sales models.”

Liquidation sales commenced on September 20, covering 28 stores across 10 states.

During these sales, customers can enjoy discounts of up to 40% on merchandise such as t-shirts, shorts, performance gear, hoodies, and drinkware. Additionally, items like store fixtures and equipment will be sold at reduced prices, according to the release.

Gift cards and returns will be accepted until October 20, as confirmed by the company.

History of Salt Life

Salt Life was founded by four water enthusiasts from Jacksonville Beach, Florida, as stated on the retailer’s website.

According to the company’s background, Salt Life is “more than just a logo; it embodies a passion for the ocean, the salty breeze, and importantly, a lifestyle.”

Moreover, the company’s mission included preserving this “way of life” through conservation initiatives.

One of the founders, Michael Hutto, is currently in prison. He received a 12-year sentence in February 2023 after an incident resulted in the death of his 18-year-old girlfriend, Lora Grace Duncan, from a gunshot wound to her stomach.
