San Francisco 49ers Set to Part Ways with De’Vondre Campbell Following Game Exit

49ers Set to Release De’Vondre Campbell Following Game Departure

The San Francisco 49ers intend to let go of linebacker De’Vondre Campbell.

During a conference call on Friday, head coach Kyle Shanahan announced that the team is preparing to part ways with the experienced linebacker.

“We’re working out the details of how to proceed. But as you heard from me last night and our players, his actions during the game were unacceptable and not something you can do to your team or fellow players and expect to stay,” Shanahan stated. “We are currently figuring out how to handle the situation, but it will be dealt with appropriately.”

Later in the call, Shanahan expressed that he does not foresee Campbell remaining with the 49ers after his sudden departure during the 49ers’ 12-6 defeat against the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday night.

According to Shanahan, the ninth-year linebacker declined to enter the game in the third quarter when asked to replace linebacker Dre Greenlaw.

Prime Video captured footage of Campbell walking off the field with his helmet in hand and heading towards the locker room.

This season, Campbell started in 12 games for the 49ers. He was replaced in the starting lineup by Greenlaw, who made his return to action after recovering from a torn Achilles sustained in Super Bowl 58.

After observing Greenlaw with what Shanahan described as “tightness” in the second half, Campbell reportedly refused to substitute for him at linebacker.

“That is someone who decided not to play for his teammates,” remarked 49ers tight end George Kittle after the game. “It’s one person making a selfish choice. I’ve never witnessed anything like that, and I hope to never see it again.”

Campbell was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons in 2016. The 31-year-old linebacker has previously played for the Falcons, Arizona Cardinals, and Green Bay Packers before joining the 49ers this year on a one-year contract.

Tragically for Campbell, his mid-game exit will be remembered as the defining moment of his time with the 49ers.
