‘Saturday Night Live’ takes aim at Trump and Harris in season opener

WASHINGTON – “Saturday Night Live” has begun its 50th season by diving into its signature style: a satirical take on the presidential race.

All major candidates faced ridicule: Vice President Kamala Harris, President Joe Biden, former President Donald Trump, Democratic running mate Tim Walz, and Republican counterpart JD Vance, depicted at rallies as crafted by the show’s writers.

Maya Rudolph portrayed a cheerful Harris stating, “I am thrilled to be campaigning in—let’s call it Wisconsin-Pennsylva-Georgia,” highlighting swing states.

Former “SNL” cast member Andy Samberg took on the role of Harris’ husband, Doug Emhoff, humorously commenting about potentially being the first First Gentleman, mentioning he would handle the White House Christmas decorations: “The theme will be Hanukkah.” Should Harris win in November, Emhoff would be the first Jewish partner of a president.

In a humorous twist, Dana Carvey joined the skit as a confused Biden character, who remarked, “A lot of folks forget I’m president, myself included.”

Jim Gaffigan portrayed Walz, embodying the relatable charm of the Minnesota governor, asserting, “This is personal for me. I love this country. And as a former teacher, I need the money.”

The SNL sketch was presented as a fictional ABC News report before shifting focus to a Trump rally, humorously depicting supporters leaving as the event dragged into its third hour.

Trump, again played by James Austin Johnson, lamented, “Where is everyone going?”, while rambling and missing Biden as a competitor.

“I miss Joe Biden . oh, Joe!” pretentiously exclaimed the faux president. “We had this in the bag.”

The sketch featured Trump introducing Vance, portrayed by Bowen Yang, who humorously commented on Trump’s endorsement: “‘JD, you’re like a son to me – not because I like you, but because I’m stuck with you.'”

The media wasn’t spared from mockery either.

The opening skit was styled as a report from ABC News with David Muir, played by Andrew Dismukes, who humorously referenced his moderation of the Harris-Trump debate and hinted jokingly about any perceived bias toward the Democrats.

“Which   duhhhh.”

In addition to presidential candidates, SNL also took shots at North Carolina Republican gubernatorial candidate Mark Robinson for his controversial postings on a pornographic site, as reported by CNN.

The well-known New York City program also addressed Mayor Eric Adams’ indictment related to bribery and foreign funding, and highlighted U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett’s viral critiques of her fellow politicians.
