As President Donald Trump takes steps to fulfill his promise of mass deportations of undocumented immigrants in the U.S., Selena Gomez expressed her heartfelt response on social media.

In a video that was said to have been shared on her Instagram Story on Monday before being deleted, the Golden Globe-nominated actress was seen wiping away tears as she told her audience, “I’m so sorry,” and lamented about how “All my people are being attacked.”

“I can’t comprehend what’s happening to the kids,” the 32-year-old said, according to shared screen recordings from social media users, including @PopBase. “I’m really sorry. I want to help the kids. I don’t know how. I will do everything I can, I promise.” In a message overlaying the video, she wrote “I’m sorry” and included the Mexican flag emoji.

Within his first week in office, Trump announced a national border emergency, deployed 1,500 troops to the border, including combat units, and assigned thousands of additional federal law enforcement officers to detain immigrants, among other actions.

This emergency declaration occurred despite illegal border crossings being at their lowest in over five years. In early January, U.S. Customs and Border Protection reported about 1,000 encounters with migrants per day along the California to Texas border – a 75% decline from the previous year.

Despite his commitment to curbing illegal immigration in his initial term, Trump did not reach the same annual deportation rates as former President Barack Obama. The Department of Homeland Security documented about 2 million deportations during Trump’s first term, compared to 2.1 million during Obama’s second term.

During the Biden administration, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has concentrated on detaining individuals posing threats to public safety and national security.

Last week, Trump, along with Congress under the newly enacted Laken Riley Act, shifted immigration enforcement priorities to include more individuals in the U.S. illegally, even those without severe criminal offenses, requiring detention for those accused, charged, or found guilty of minor crimes. Trump also labeled criminal cartels as “global terrorist groups,” which would allow for military deployment.

Selena Gomez on undocumented immigrants: ‘An issue I think about daily’

Gomez, a third-generation Mexican American through her father’s side, has consistently voiced her concerns regarding immigration, stating it’s “an issue I think about daily.”

“In the 1970s, my aunt crossed the border from Mexico to the U.S. hidden in the back of a truck. My grandparents followed, and soon after, my dad was born in Texas. In 1992, I was born a U.S. citizen, thanks to their courage and sacrifices,” she expressed in a 2019 Time essay. “Over the last forty years, my family has worked diligently to achieve U.S. citizenship.”

“Undocumented immigration is something I reflect on every day, and I am constantly reminded of how fortunate I am to have been born in this country because of my family and fortunate circumstances,” she wrote. “However, when I read current events or see discussions about immigration heatedly debated on social media, I feel scared for those in similar situations. I feel anxious for my country.”

Talking about her role as an executive producer of the 2019 Netflix docuseries “Living Undocumented,” Gomez stated, “I am worried about the treatment of people in my country. As a Mexican-American woman, I feel an obligation to use my voice to represent those who are too frightened to speak up.”

“I hope that by sharing the stories of these eight families, it inspires people to be more empathetic, to learn about immigration, and to form their own viewpoints.”

Gomez, who was born in Grand Prairie, Texas, has included Spanish in her music and most recently, in her lead role in the Oscar-nominated film “Emilia Pérez.” However, she faced criticism from some, including Eugenio Derbez, who later retracted his “careless” comments, regarding her proficiency in Spanish and the film’s portrayal of drug trafficking in Mexico.
