Senate Approves Sean Duffy as New Transportation Secretary, Promises to Enhance Travel Safety Standards

Sean Duffy appointed Transportation Secretary by Senate, pledges to enhance travel safety

WASHINGTON – On Tuesday, the U.S. Senate gave its approval for Sean Duffy to become the secretary of Transportation, enabling another member of President Donald Trump’s Cabinet to begin implementing plans aimed at enhancing traffic safety, streamlining construction regulations, and restoring public trust in Boeing.

Duffy’s confirmation came through a vote of 77 in favor and 22 against.

During the nomination process, Trump expressed confidence that Duffy, a former Republican representative from Wisconsin, would leverage his congressional experience from eight years to help restore the country’s infrastructure and enhance travel safety.

In his confirmation hearing on January 15, Duffy emphasized that his primary focus would be on improving road safety to lower the high number of fatalities caused by traffic accidents, which exceed 40,000 annually in the U.S.

At the age of 53, Duffy highlighted another key goal of addressing large-scale construction projects and working to minimize the bureaucratic hurdles that often delay vital infrastructure initiatives.

He also pointed out the necessity for more air traffic controllers to advance aviation safety and vowed to collaborate with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) — the agency overseeing Boeing — and Congress to rebuild confidence in the aircraft manufacturer following tragic accidents abroad.

Duffy is notably a co-host of “The Bottom Line” on Fox Business and is among several hosts from Fox News that Trump has appointed to his administration. His wife, Rachel Campos-Duffy, is also affiliated with the network, hosting “Fox & Friends Weekend.” Recently confirmed Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who held a position on “Fox & Friends Weekend,” and former GOP Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, a previous host on Fox Business, are among others in similar roles.

Since Trump’s inauguration on January 20, the Senate has also confirmed appointments for Secretary of State Marco Rubio, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. Upcoming Senate confirmations are anticipated for Doug Collins as head of the Department of Veterans Affairs, Chris Wright as Secretary of the Department of Energy, Doug Burgum as leader of the Interior Department, and Lee Zeldin for administrator of the U.S. EPA.

Duffy served as a representative for Wisconsin in the U.S. House from 2011 until 2019.

Before his political career, in the late 1990s and early 2000s, Duffy was a participant in several MTV reality programs, such as “The Real World: Boston,” “Road Rules: All Stars,” and “Real World/Road Rules Challenge: Battle of the Seasons.”

During the filming of another MTV show, he met his wife, who first appeared on “The Real World: San Francisco.” They tied the knot in 1998 and have nine children together.

Duffy’s television journey began in 1997 with the sixth season of “The Real World: Boston.” Prior to this, he graduated from St. Mary’s University in Minneapolis and obtained a law degree from William Mitchell College of Law in St. Paul. Early in his career, he held the position of district attorney in Ashland County, Wisconsin.
