Sheryl Swoopes Responds to Nancy Lieberman Amid Caitlin Clark Controversy
A serious disagreement has emerged between two iconic figures in women’s basketball, Sheryl Swoopes and Nancy Lieberman, following their recent remarks regarding the current star Caitlin Clark.
The tension stems from differing views on Caitlin Clark’s influence in the sport, with Lieberman stating that their friendship is effectively over.
“My life is fine whether Sheryl Swoopes is in it or not,” Lieberman shared during an episode of a podcast hosted by Stephen A. Smith on Monday.
In response, Swoopes took to social media later that evening, stating, “I’m also doing just fine without you (and him).”
The roots of this disagreement trace back to comments made by Swoopes on Gilbert Arenas’ podcast, where she seemed to minimize Clark’s achievement in breaking the NCAA all-time scoring record.
Swoopes mistakenly suggested that Clark had an additional year of eligibility due to the COVID-19 pandemic while surpassing Kelsey Plum’s record in women’s Division I basketball. Lieberman claims she reached out to Swoopes as a friend to clarify the misunderstanding.
<p”Well, she got upset with me on the phone,” Lieberman recounted to Smith. “I told her, ‘Sheryl, I’m just trying to help you, not hurt you.’ So now, our friendship is pretty much over.”
Lieberman also criticized Swoopes for not acknowledging Clark on a recent episode of her own podcast, despite complimenting other members of the Indiana Fever who have performed well post-Olympics.
In contrast, Swoopes attempted to clarify that she doesn’t harbor any negative feelings towards Clark. She shared screenshots of a text conversation with Clark from February on her X account on Monday.
In the text exchange, Swoopes admitted she “was confused about this year’s eligibility due to COVID Lol! I truly respect you and your game.”
Clark responded positively, expressing “no hard feelings” towards Swoopes and stating, “I’m grateful for what you’ve done for women’s basketball and for inspiring girls like me ”
