Shohei Ohtani becomes the first MLB player to record 50 home runs and steal 50 bases
(This article has been updated with the latest information.)
Shohei Ohtani has made history by joining the exclusive 50/50 club.
Throughout MLB history, players have swiped at least 50 bases in a season nearly 500 times and hit 50 or more home runs on 50 occasions. However, no one had managed to accomplish both feats in the same season—until now.
On Thursday, Ohtani, 30, a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers, secured his spot in the 50/50 club by stealing his 50th and 51st bases while hitting his 49th, 50th, and 51st home runs against the Miami Marlins.
Using stats from Sports Reference’s StatHead Baseball, we can see how Ohtani stacks up against baseball legends.
Examining the elite 50 club
Ohtani’s achievement of over 50 home runs this season marks the 50th instance of a player achieving this milestone. Below is a chart comparing him to others in the 50 home-run club and the top single-season base thieves who have at least 15 home runs.
“Achieving 50/50 is a remarkable feat,” noted Sean Forman, president of Sports Reference. “It’s never been done in a single season, and only Barry Bonds and Brady Anderson have ever managed to hit 50 home runs and steal 50 bases in any season throughout their careers.”
Ohtani competes with the leaders in the 50+ stolen base club
With the 50/50 milestone long considered unattainable, it’s noteworthy that both Ohtani and Ronald Acuña Jr. of the Atlanta Braves have come closest in recent seasons.
Acuña’s impressive last season featured 73 stolen bases and 41 home runs. Although Ohtani may not eclipse Acuña’s record of 73 stolen bases, he has outperformed him in home runs, making him the first player to reach both the 45/45 and now the 50/50 clubs.
Ricky Henderson of the Oakland A’s holds the modern era’s single-season stolen base record with 130, which he set in 1982 while also hitting 10 home runs that year. Remarkably, Henderson’s name appears 13 times among players with 50 or more stolen bases in a single season.
Ohtani stands tall among the leaders in the 50+ home run club
After reaching the 50-home run milestone on Thursday, Ohtani now sits at the top of the chart below, which ranks members of the 50 home-run club by their stolen bases.
The last player who hit over 50 home runs with 24 stolen bases was Alex Rodriguez from the New York Yankees back in 2007. Before that, you would have to look back more than half a century to find Willie Mays of the New York Giants, who accomplished 51 home runs and 24 stolen bases.
What’s next for Shohei Ohtani?
Ohtani has six regular season games remaining, and the upcoming schedule is as follows:
Ohtani’s ranking in speed and power
With two home runs and four stolen bases since Ohtani’s record-breaking game, he surpasses Acuña’s 2023 season, according to Baseball Reference’s Power-Speed leaders list, which measures players by a formula that combines home runs and stolen bases in a single season.
