A man accused in a plot against Trump faces new charges relating to child exploitation
The son of a man charged with gun offenses related to a plot against former President Donald Trump has been charged with possessing child pornography.
Oran Routh, hailing from Greensboro, North Carolina, is facing federal charges for receipt of child pornography on July 23 and possession of child pornography on September 21, according to court documents.
The charges came after an FBI search of his residence linked to an investigation that was “unrelated to child exploitation,” according to court documents. During the search, the FBI discovered a Samsung Galaxy Note 9 in a laptop bag, which contained “hundreds of child pornography files” depicting minors as young as about 8 years old, the documents stated.
Routh has not yet submitted a formal response to the charges, and no lawyer has been identified in court records.
He is the offspring of Ryan Routh, aged 58, who is facing two federal gun-related charges for what authorities have described as a plot to assassinate Trump. The older Routh has been connected to an SKS rifle discovered at the Trump International Golf Club, where a Secret Service agent reportedly fired at an individual who aimed a weapon at Trump on September 15.
On Monday, prosecutors revealed that the elder Routh had traveled from Greensboro to West Palm Beach on August 14, with his phone being monitored and traced near the golf course and Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate for nearly a month.
After a three-hour hearing in Florida, U.S. Magistrate Judge Ryon McCabe ordered that Routh be held without bail, as federal prosecutors associated him with the rifle that was found at the Trump International Golf Club.
