Southwest Airlines to Offer Assigned Seats Starting in 2025
Southwest Airlines has announced plans to introduce assigned seating as early as next year.
The airline expects to start selling tickets with seat assignments in the latter half of 2025, with the initial flights scheduled for the first half of 2026, according to their press release. Research indicates that this model is favored by 80% of Southwest’s customers, along with 86% of those who travel with other airlines.
This change was first mentioned in July, marking a departure from their traditional open seating system. This transition is part of broader efforts to enhance passenger and investor satisfaction amidst recent financial pressures on the airline.
“Our recent efforts have focused on establishing a strong foundation for our transformation,” stated Ryan Green, Southwest’s executive vice president of commercial transformation, in the announcement. “We have begun updating our cabins with better WiFi, in-seat power outlets, larger overhead storage, improved operational efficiency, and optimized flight schedules. We will continue to enhance our competitive advantages while responding to consumer needs in our current fast-paced market.”
This update follows the airline’s earlier announcement about scaling back its service and workforce in Atlanta, Georgia.
What Additional Changes Can Passengers Expect?
“Southwest will provide extra legroom seating options, which can offer up to five additional inches of space for about a third of the seats, while still keeping a standard economy seat pitch that ranks highly in the industry,” the company stated. “These new seating choices are expected to generate greater demand and increase revenue per passenger.”
Customers who purchase premium seats will enjoy priority boarding alongside loyal Southwest customers.
The airline is also formalizing partnerships with international airlines, starting with Icelandair, with flights from Baltimore-Washington International Airport anticipated to launch in 2025. New services will include customizable vacation packages called Getaways by Southwest and updates to the Rapid Rewards program benefits.
A-List members will enjoy the option to select standard legroom seats during booking, while extra legroom seats will be available within 48 hours before departure at no extra cost, subject to availability. A-List Preferred members can choose any open seat, including those with extra legroom, without additional charges at the time of booking.
Additionally, overnight flights are expected to launch in February 2025, and the airline aims to reduce turnaround times between flights to boost aircraft efficiency and simplify daily operations for employees.
Despite these changes, the airline will maintain its popular policy of allowing two free checked bags for passengers.
