‘Scandal’ Stars Reunite
On Thursday, Kerry Washington made a spectacular entrance, bringing Tony Goldwyn on stage for a special “Scandal” reunion.
Washington was met with enthusiastic applause as she stepped up to energize the audience.
“I’m here on this stage, but you are the main characters in this narrative. You are the fixers, and I dare say, the Olivia Popes. You are the superheroes of our democracy,” she expressed passionately.
She encouraged attendees to record a video to rally their family and friends to vote. After requesting her phone from backstage, Goldwyn handed it to her, and together they filmed a video leading the chant, “When we fight, we win.”
The “Little Fires Everywhere” star humorously told Goldwyn to step off the stage: “You gotta go!”
Later that evening, Washington was joined by Harris’ grandnieces to help the audience learn how to pronounce the vice president’s name. “Confusion is fine, but disrespect is not,” she stated.
Washington is no stranger to advocating for political causes. When Kamala Harris launched her campaign, Washington voiced support on X, stating, “Harris can and will win. I believe in her and us. Let’s goooooooo!”
Previously, Washington openly supported Barack Obama in 2012 and Hillary Clinton in 2016, even speaking at the conventions. She also hosted an online segment at the 2020 DNC after campaigning for Joe Biden alongside her husband, Nnamdi Asomugha, that year.
Using her fame from “Scandal,” she has promoted voter registration, including in 2020 when she tweeted a humorous yet impactful clip featuring Olivia Pope and President Fitz (Goldwyn) with a tweet directing followers to a voter registration website.
Goldwyn is currently featured as Manhattan’s district attorney Nicholas Baxter on “Law & Order” and serves as an ambassador for The Innocence Project. In 2016, he directed a campaign ad supporting Hillary Clinton with appearances from stars associated with ShondaLand, including Washington, Ellen Pompeo, Viola Davis, and Shonda Rhimes.
Goldwyn and Washington starred together for seven seasons on “Scandal” as the President and his crisis manager, respectively.
‘The Office’ star Mindy Kaling and ‘The View’ co-host Ana Navarro lead DNC
Ana Navarro, a political strategist and commentator known for her Republican views, has openly criticized former President Donald Trump, labeling him a racist due to his remarks about immigrants. She identifies as a “Never Trumper,” and has also voiced her distrust of Trump-aligned politicians like Ron DeSantis. Navarro voted for Hillary Clinton in 2016 and Joe Biden in 2020.
Mindy Kaling previously co-chaired a fundraising event with Reese Witherspoon, which was held for Biden’s 2020 campaign. In 2019, Kaling joined Harris on her YouTube channel for a cooking session where they made masala dosa.
Pink and the Chicks deliver heartfelt performances
Pink made the convention a memorable experience by performing alongside her 13-year-old daughter, Willow Sage Hart.
The mother-daughter duo, accompanied by three other musicians and a guitarist, delivered an acoustic rendition of her 2017 song “What About Us.” Throughout the past year, Willow has been featured throughout Pink’s world tour.
Also performing that night were the Chicks, formerly known as the Dixie Chicks, who sang “The Star-Spangled Banner.” They had previously performed the anthem during the virtual convention in 2020.
Eva Longoria and D.L. Hughley support Harris
Eva Longoria expressed strong support for Kamala Harris. After participating in the Texas roll call, she reflected on her childhood, relating it to Harris’s journey.
Longoria emphasized that support from family is essential for Americans to attain their goals, highlighting the importance of perseverance through challenges.
She concluded her speech with a new catchphrase for Harris’s campaign, modifying the Spanish expression “Si se puede,” which translates to “Yes, we can,” to “She se puede.”
In his address, comedian D.L. Hughley sharply criticized Trump’s recent comments indicating confusion regarding Harris’s racial identity, suggesting that she “happened to turn Black.” He humorously noted that Harris “has been Black longer than Trump has been Republican.”
Hughley later issued an apology to Harris for previously misrepresenting her history as a prosecutor, stating, “Your apology should match the volume of your accusations, and I’m here to apologize to the whole world. I was mistaken.”
Stevie Wonder, John Legend, and Maren Morris shine on the DNC’s 3rd day
Legendary artist Stevie Wonder energized the crowd with his performance of the 1972 classic “Higher Ground” during the convention on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, John Legend rocked the stage by covering Prince and The Revolution’s 1984 hit “Let’s Go Crazy,” joined by Sheila E., one of Prince’s collaborators, creating an electrifying atmosphere.
Singer Maren Morris also took the stage to perform her “protest song,” titled “Better Than We Found It,” released in 2020.
Oprah addresses JD Vance’s ‘childless cat lady’ remarks at DNC
Oprah Winfrey surprised attendees with her appearance at the Democratic National Convention Wednesday night, urging independents and undecided voters to choose Vice President Harris based on their beliefs.
During her speech, Winfrey lauded Michelle Obama, who had spoken the previous night, and honored the memory of civil rights leader John Lewis. She also criticized Sen. JD Vance’s comments about childless women living with cats.
“We’re not so different from those around us. When a house is ablaze, we don’t inquire about the owner’s race or faith. We don’t consider who they live with or their voting habits, and we just do our utmost to help. If the residence belongs to a childless cat lady, we make sure to rescue that cat too,” Winfrey stated.
Kenan Thompson criticizes ‘Project 2025’
Comedian Kenan Thompson, known for “Saturday Night Live,” appeared at the convention on Wednesday and used his platform to criticize “Project 2025,” a lengthy, conservative presidential initiative.
Thompson referred to the document as the “terms and conditions for a potential second Trump presidency.”
“Have you ever seen a document that could harm a small creature and democracy simultaneously? Here it is,” he remarked while addressing Americans who would be impacted by the suggested Republican policy framework.
One audience member, Becky, shared that she’s been married to her wife for almost eight years. Thompson unfortunately informed her that Project 2025 proposes to “remove protections for LGBTQ+ Americans,” potentially leading society “back to the Stone Age.”
Thompson emphasized, “You can prevent (Project 2025) from happening by voting for Kamala Harris as the next president of the United States.”
Trump’s campaign has tried to distance itself from the project, which was spearheaded by the Heritage Foundation in collaboration with various conservative organizations.
Patti LaBelle and Common perform on Day 2 of DNC 2024
Patti LaBelle and Common energized the Democratic National Convention (DNC) festivities.
The legendary soul-pop artist and the Academy Award-winning rapper both took the stage on the second day of the convention. LaBelle performed her classic song “You Are My Friend” from 1977 and concluded her act with the words, “God bless America, Kamala Harris!”
In a duet, Common performed his track “Fortunate” alongside gospel singer Jonathan McReynolds, who also showcased his song “God Is Good.”
Common expressed his gratitude, stating, “I thank God for this moment when Kamala Harris will make a transformative impact in the world. With love, hope, and grace, we are fortunate.”
Both artists had previously graced the DNC stage; LaBelle sang “A Change is Gonna Come” at the 2004 convention, while Common performed “Glory” in collaboration with John Legend during the 2020 event.
Lil Jon brings Georgia spirit to convention roll call
Lil Jon got the audience excited during the roll call for the convention, representing Georgia as the state’s delegates cast their vote for the Democratic nominee, a largely symbolic gesture since the actual nomination had already been established.
When DJ Cassidy announced that it was Georgia’s turn, cameras focused on Lil Jon, who hyped up the crowd with his hit “Turn Down for What” from 2013.
“Ladies and gentlemen, we are present tonight to officially nominate Kamala Harris for president,” he proclaimed to the audience, leading a chant of “We’re not going back!”
The rapper then treated the crowd to a performance of his 2002 hit “Get Low,” creatively swapping out the term “walls” for the name of vice presidential nominee Gov. Tim Walz.
Other notable figures participating in the roll call included Wendell Pierce representing Louisiana, Eva Longoria for Texas, and Spike Lee for New York.
Mickey Guyton and Jason Isbell headline DNC 2024 opening night
The DNC called on some of the biggest stars in music to inaugurate this year’s convention.
Country star Mickey Guyton and Grammy-winning musician Jason Isbell performed on the convention’s opening night on Monday.
Guyton delivered a powerful performance of her 2021 song “All American,” while Isbell captivated the audience with his labor-themed anthem “Something More Than Free.”
Before her performance, Guyton expressed her excitement on Instagram, stating, “I’m so honored to be performing TONIGHT at the DNC. Y’all tune in!”
James Taylor addresses missed performance at DNC 2024
Folk icon James Taylor was initially slated to perform on the opening night of the 2024 DNC along with Guyton and Isbell.
He was scheduled for the 9 p.m. programming block, but noticeably absent from Day 1.
DNC officials later communicated that loud applause from the audience led to timing issues that resulted in parts of the program being cut.
Taylor’s publicist, Allison Elbl, informed YSL News that “there are no plans to reschedule” his performance.
Taylor took to Instagram to apologize for the performance being missed.
On Tuesday, he expressed his “honor” in being present at the convention.
