State Farm Cancels Super Bowl Commercial Due to Wildfires in Los Angeles Area
State Farm has decided not to run an advertisement during the upcoming Super Bowl, opting instead to devote its efforts to aiding those affected by the wildfires in Southern California.
“State Farm, along with its agents and employees, is dedicated to supporting customers impacted by the wildfires in Southern California during this difficult time,” a representative of the company said in a statement to YSL News on Thursday.
“Our claims department is the largest in the industry, and we are mobilizing our comprehensive catastrophe response teams to assist customers – whether they are in Los Angeles or anywhere in the nation,” the statement highlighted.
“We are entirely focused on providing assistance to the residents of Los Angeles. Therefore, we will not be airing our advertisement during the game as we had originally intended,” the statement concluded.
The insurance company provides coverage to over 8 million customers in California, making it the largest insurer in the state. They have already recorded over 7,400 claims related to home and auto damages, with numbers expected to rise as residents return to evaluate the destruction. State Farm insures around 250,000 homes and 880,000 vehicles just in LA County.
Earlier this year, State Farm declared it would cease offering home insurance to new customers in California due to the threats posed by wildfires and escalating construction costs.
At that time, the insurer explained that this decision was the result of “historic increases in construction costs that have outpaced inflation, a rapidly increasing risk of catastrophe, and a difficult reinsurance market.”
State Farm to Offer Policy Renewals
In 2024, State Farm reduced its policies in the Santa Monica Mountains, affecting 70% of customers in Pacific Palisades – approximately 1,600 homeowners – who lost their coverage, according to the New York Times.
On Wednesday, the company announced it will allow renewals for residential policyholders whose properties were affected by the wildfires. This applies to homeowners, rental property owners, and residential community associations, including condo associations.
Super Bowl Advertising Costs
According to Front Office Sports, Fox is offering 30 seconds of ad time for about $7 million for Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans, which aligns with pricing from the previous two Super Bowls, showing only a slight increase from the 2022 game.
State Farm featured a 60-second spot during last year’s Super Bowl, which starred Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito. That advertisement was recognized as the top pick in YSL News’s annual Super Bowl Ad Meter, a tool assessing public responses to Super Bowl commercials.
