Former Democratic Leader Steny Hoyer Experiences Stroke, Is Doing Well After Treatment
Representative Steny Hoyer, a Democrat from Maryland, had a mild stroke on Sunday. However, his office announced on Tuesday that he has no long-term symptoms and is expected to return to his regular activities next week.
The 85-year-old former House majority leader “has responded positively to treatment,” according to a statement from his office.
Hoyer has been a member of Congress since 1981, representing Maryland’s 5th district, which is located in the southern region of the state.
He served as majority leader while Democratic Speaker Nancy Pelosi was in office from 2007 to 2011 and again from 2019 to 2022. During the time when Republicans controlled the House, he held the position of minority whip.
Hoyer retired from his leadership role alongside Pelosi in 2023 and is now campaigning for reelection in the upcoming general election this November. The Republican Party currently has a slim majority in the House with 220 seats to the Democrats’ 212.
