As October comes to an end, five Stop & Shop stores across multiple states will be shutting their doors in November.

The grocery chain previously revealed plans to close 32 stores that have not been performing well since July. The company indicated that closing these nearly three dozen locations in the Northeast would help them focus on future growth. The closures will occur gradually, with all stores expected to be shut by Saturday, November 2.

“Stop & Shop takes pride in the strong relationships and connections we’ve built as a local grocery provider for over a century, and we are dedicated to supporting our employees, customers, and communities,” stated the President of Stop & Shop.Gordon Reid mentioned in a press release from July that “Stop & Shop has reviewed its entire store network and made the tough choice to shut down stores that are not meeting performance expectations. This decision aims to establish a solid foundation for our brand’s future growth.”

The grocery chain, part of Ahold Delhaize USA, will maintain operations at 350 locations across five states. The announcement regarding the closures stated that employees at the affected stores will be given opportunities for positions within the company.

“We are committed to fostering a community where everyone can thrive and collaborate, ensuring that all of our store associates remain part of the Stop & Shop family as we prepare to serve customers at other nearby stores,” Reid stated.

Stop & Shop has not yet responded to requests for comment.

Despite these closures, Stop & Shop will still have 81 locations in Connecticut, 115 in Massachusetts, 47 in New Jersey, 91 in New York, and 25 in Rhode Island, with over 50,000 employees across all stores.

As per local news, a store in Newton, Massachusetts, shut its doors in August, followed by the remaining locations across the state closing down on Thursday. The stores in Shrewsbury and Worcester plan to contribute unsold goods to the Worcester County Food Bank, as reported by the Worcester Telegram & Gazette, a part of the YSL News Network.

In Rhode Island, the Eastside Marketplace situated in Providence is set to close this Friday.

Johnston will shut down on Thursday afternoon, as reported by local news outlet WPRI.

According to Connecticut Insider, all affected locations in Connecticut are expected to close on Halloween. Further details regarding the closures in New Jersey and New York have not yet been released, although these stores are scheduled to close by November 2.
