Suitcase of Secrets: Florida Woman Convicted for Boyfriend’s Murder

A Florida woman convicted for suffocating her boyfriend in a suitcase

A woman from Florida has been found guilty of second-degree murder after her boyfriend died from suffocation inside a suitcase. She claimed they were simply playing a game of hide-and-seek when the incident occurred.

Sarah Boone, 47, from Winter Park, explained to authorities that she and her boyfriend, Jorge Torres Jr., were drinking on the night of February 23, 2020. She stated that Torres climbed into the suitcase willingly, and they were joking when she closed the zipper.

After an argument, Boone went to bed, assuming he could easily escape the suitcase. However, when she woke the next morning, she realized he had not escaped and had died inside.

Prosecutors contended that Boone was aware he was trapped and could not get out, which led to his death. A jury declared her guilty of second-degree murder on Friday.

“I zipped him up. It was all in fun—we were laughing about how he fit inside the suitcase,” Boone testified to the jury. “We thought it was hilarious.”

During the trial, Boone claimed she recorded a video on her phone while Torres was in the suitcase, intending to talk to him and share her feelings. She alleged that he had been abusive toward her in the past.

A two-minute video was shown in court, where Torres could be heard repeatedly gasping that he couldn’t breathe while Boone laughed in response.

“That’s what you do when you choke me,” Boone replied during the video.

When he again mentioned he couldn’t breathe, Boone responded, “That’s on you.”

After filming, Boone admitted that they had a heated argument while Torres was still inside the suitcase. Torres reportedly threatened her, which made her fear he would escape and potentially harm her. She claimed he managed to get part of his hand out, prompting her to hit his hand back into the suitcase with a baseball bat.

During the autopsy, Torres was found to have bruises on his hand, contusions on his skull, and a split lip, evidence presented in court revealed.

Boone maintained to the jury that she never intended for him to die in the suitcase and did not believe it was possible. She stated that after waking up, she searched the apartment for him before discovering he was still zipped inside the suitcase.

Boone could face life in prison, with her sentencing scheduled for early December, according to court records.
