Live Updates: Sunday Elimination Round of Little League World Series

Following Saturday’s matches where four teams were eliminated from the 2024 Little League World Series (LLWS), another four teams will bid farewell today.

The elimination stage is currently happening in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. This double-elimination tournament allows teams that lost in the winners’ bracket a chance to progress to the semifinals, provided they can avoid further losses.

On Saturday, teams from the Metro and Mid-Atlantic Regions made their way forward in the U.S. elimination bracket, winning 6-3 and 5-0, respectively. In the international bracket, Canada and Aruba (the Caribbean champion) also advanced following their 12-5 and 8-3 victories.

Stay tuned to YSL News for updates and highlights from today’s four elimination matches taking place in Williamsport:

Weather Disrupts Pennsylvania’s Momentum

A rain delay has interrupted Pennsylvania’s game when they had runners on second and third with just one out, leading 11-2 in the bottom of the third inning.

Pennsylvania Powers Through Rain Delay

After a lengthy weather break, Pennsylvania resumed with vigor, scoring four runs before Washington could even begin warming up a new pitcher. With their lead ballooning to 10-2, they found themselves with the bases loaded and only one out. A passed ball then increased the score to 11-2.

The mercy rule does not apply until the fourth inning, which means Pennsylvania will have at least one more inning to secure an early game termination, even if they don’t score again.

Weather Delay Halts the Game

While the New York Yankees mingle with fans in the stands, rain is causing a temporary delay. Pennsylvania is currently leading 6-1.

Lightning continued to flash near the stadium, resulting in further postponement, even half an hour after the first delay.

Pennsylvania Increases Their Lead

For the second consecutive inning, Pennsylvania loaded the bases without getting an out, prompting Washington to replace Stolmeier on the mound. Rawly Jennings took over, hoping to limit the damage.

Jennings immediately allowed a run as a wild pitch let a runner score from third. Afterward, Tyler Wexler managed to drive in another run with a single, leaving runners on first and third with no outs. Jennings’s first out came from a passed ball, where the catcher quickly returned the ball to home plate to prevent a run from scoring. The final out of the inning was recorded in a similar fashion, but Pennsylvania added significant runs, bringing the lead to five by the end of the second inning.

Pennsylvania is currently ahead 6-1.

Washington Narrows the Gap

Washington managed to place their leadoff runner on base again and got him to third base with just one out after a wild pitch and a groundout to second base. A sacrifice fly by Stolmeier brought the runner home, reducing Pennsylvania’s advantage to 4-1.

Matchup: Pennsylvania vs. Washington

This crucial match between the Mid-Atlantic (Pennsylvania) and Northwest (Washington) teams began with both sides scoring on their opening hits. Pennsylvania converted their leadoff hitter into a run and even managed to bring all bases home successfully.

Following a passed ball while the bases were loaded, right fielder Greyson Gage delivered a single to center field, earning two more runs. Pennsylvania quickly established a 3-0 lead with only one out recorded. Washington’s pitcher, Easton Stolmeier, then gave up another double to the wall, allowing Gage to score, which broadened Pennsylvania’s advantage. Stolmeier eventually settled down, retiring the next two batters, but the early damage was significant.

After one inning, Pennsylvania leads 4-0.

Mexico Dominates Canada, 8-0

Against Mexico, Canada couldn’t replicate their previous game’s stunning second inning. Mexico established an early three-run lead in the first inning and maintained it throughout the game. Mexican pitchers Hernandez, Aguilar, and Balderas limited Canada to just two hits.

With this victory, Mexico moves forward in the elimination bracket and will face the loser of the upcoming Monday game between Chinese-Taipei and Cuba. Canada, on the other hand, is out of the tournament after a second consecutive defeat.

Antonio Guerrero Scores from Second Base on Sac Fly

Kayden Krestanovich, the Canadian left fielder, made an impressive catch in foul territory to dismiss Ulises Ortiz, but Guerrero seized the opportunity to sprint from second base, successfully scoring on the deep fly, making the score 8-0 in favor of Mexico as the sixth inning approaches.

Dominic Balderas Shuts Down Canadian Batters

After Aguilar issued a walk and struck out another batter, Balderas took over in the fifth inning as the third pitcher from Mexico. He wrapped up the inning by inducing a groundout and striking out another batter.

Popovich Keeps Mexico Scoreless

The Canadian reliever allowed a single walk but navigated the inning without further issues with a flyout and several groundouts, preventing Mexico from increasing their lead past 7-0.

Aguilar escapes bases-loaded jam

Canada fills the bases with two singles and a walk, but Aguilar manages to get a ground ball back to himself. He throws to home plate to preserve Mexico’s shutout as they lead 7-0.

Ronan Bobiles breaks up no-hit bid

In the fourth inning, Bobiles, the second Canadian batter, finally delivers his team’s first hit of the match with a single to left field.

Mexico further extends lead

The Mexican team increases their lead to 7-0 after Santiago Sotelo scores due to a double play. He started the inning with a double and moved up on an error by the throw from the next batter.

Mexico through three no-hit innings

While Canada has managed to get on base with a few walks and an error, they remain without a hit. Mexico is halfway through another no-hitter after previously achieving one in the tournament’s first game.

Francisco Aguilar enters to pitch

After a walk and a pop-out in the third inning, Mexico opts for a pitching change, bringing Aguilar in to replace Hernandez on the mound.

Wild pitch brings home another run

Mexico leads 6-0 when Popovich’s ball four goes astray, allowing Hernandez to cross home plate from third base.

Guerrero, Hernandez add to Mexico’s lead

The Mexican shortstop contributes an RBI single to right field after drawing a walk and moving to second on a sac bunt. Pitcher Raul Hernandez Jr. then hits an RBI triple off the right field wall to score Guerrero, making it 5-0 Mexico with a runner on third and one out in the top of the third inning.

Raul Hernandez Jr. strikes out the side

Canada did not manage to advance in the bottom of the second inning. Mexico’s starting pitcher achieved three strikeouts in a row, all swinging, against Canada’s top batters.

Eric Popovich works perfect second

Canada turns to their bullpen as they enter the second inning, and it pays off. Popovich records a flyout and two groundouts, completing a flawless inning with just 12 pitches.

Raul Hernandez Jr. completes scoreless first

Hernandez required nearly 30 pitches to navigate through the first inning. With strong support from his infielders, Mexico’s starting pitcher exited the inning without allowing any runs.

Mexico turns artful double play

Second baseman Gerardo Cisneros fields a ground ball flawlessly and quickly flips it to shortstop Antonio Guerrero, who makes a precise throw to first base for a 4-6-3 double play.

Cabalfin works 14-pitch walk

Canada’s leadoff hitter, Xavier Cabalfin, puts up a strong fight in his first at-bat of the match, eventually drawing a walk after fouling off four consecutive pitches on a full count.

Luis Longoria knocks in two more

Mexico’s lead grows to 3-0 thanks to a one-out hit to left field by Longoria, who advances to second base on the throw attempting to get the runner at home.

Mexico takes 1-0 lead

After an infield single, a bunt single, and a passed ball, Guerrero manages to score the first run of the game. Mexico holds runners on second and third base with no outs at the top of the first inning.

Antonio Guerrero gets things going for Mexico

As Mexico faces Canada in the second elimination game of the day, leadoff batter Antonio Guerrero opens with a double to the left-field gap.

New York defeats Illinois, 4-0

Scarangelo secures the shutout by inducing a popout to shortstop Alex Torres in shallow left field. New York wins 4-0 and stays in the elimination bracket, set to play the loser of Monday’s Florida-Texas game on Tuesday, while Illinois’ journey in the LLWS concludes after their second loss.

Ethan Chan keeps Illinois alive

Chan ends a streak of 13 straight outs by his team’s hitters with a sharp line drive up the middle. He moves to second on a passed ball, giving Illinois a chance with two outs remaining in the sixth.

Scarangelo takes the mound

In a switch, the third baseman takes over pitching duties from Ruggiero to try and finish the game. He gets a groundout on his first pitch of the final inning and then strikes out the next batter swinging.

Wanless works perfect fifth

After New York’s productive inning, Illinois’ reliever quickly dispatches the heart of New York’s lineup in order. New York still leads 4-0 entering the final inning.

Scarangelo adds nice defensive play to his Sunday résumé

Just one inning after his 2-RBI single, Scarangelo expertly fields a tricky hop from Illinois first baseman Jimmy Macri, wrapping up the inning flawlessly as he throws him out at first base.

Michael Kipnis prevents further scoring threat

After New York’s Dylan DeGaeta singles with a bloop hit to right field, Kipnis of Illinois throws out Scarangelo as he attempts to advance to third base. This strong defensive move keeps Illinois in the game, but New York’s four runs give them the advantage.

Dean Scarangello continues big inning for New York

The third baseman hits a line drive to right field, securing a 2-RBI base hit. New York now leads 4-0.

Grant Wanless on the mound for Illinois

After New York scores its first run, Illinois turns to their bullpen in the fourth inning. Wanless gets an out against his first batter, but a sacrifice fly from Alex Torres allows McLean to score, pushing the score to 2-0 in favor of New York.

Chace Curro breaks the scoreless tie

The center fielder from New York hits a sharp ground ball between the third baseman and shortstop for Illinois, allowing a runner to score. New York leads 1-0 with players on second and third, as Curro advanced due to a defensive lapse.

Illinois makes a crucial defensive play

Second baseman Emiliano Nepomuceno made an exceptional stop on a hard-hit grounder, preventing a runner from advancing home while recording the out at first base. What seemed like a guaranteed run for New York turned into the first out of the inning for Illinois.

New York in control at the bottom of the fourth

Stephen Grippo secured a deep hit, taking him to second base after an error by Illinois’ right fielder. One batter later, Nicholas McLean helped advance Grippo to third with a quirky hit over the second baseman. New York now has players on first and third, with no outs in the fourth inning.

Vin Ruggiero’s flawless fourth inning

The starting pitcher for New York effortlessly retired the top of Illinois’ lineup, yielding three consecutive groundouts—two to the second baseman and one back to himself. The score remains tight at 0.

Scoreless showdown between Illinois and New York through 3 innings

In the first game of the day, neither Illinois nor New York has managed to score despite several hits. The knockout game will culminate in the last three innings.
