Sweet Heist: Unveiling the Premiere and Streaming Details of Canada’s Maple Syrup Caper

‘The Sticky:’ Premiere date, streaming details for the maple syrup heist series

Between late 2011 and early 2012, around 3,000 tons of maple syrup, valued at $18.7 million, were stolen from a warehouse managed by the Quebec Maple Syrup Producers, who control about 77% of the world’s syrup supply, as reported by CBC Canada.

This event, known popularly as “The Great Maple Syrup Robbery,” captured global attention, and now a dramatized version of the story is arriving on Prime Video this weekend.

The show, titled “The Sticky,” features Ruth Landry (portrayed by Margo Martindale), a determined middle-aged maple syrup farmer. She teams up with a fiery Boston mobster and a mild-mannered French-Canadian security guard to execute a multi-million dollar heist on Quebec’s maple syrup stockpile after bureaucratic officials threaten to take away everything she cherishes, according to the series synopsis.

“Inspired by the real-life heist that made headlines in 2012, resulting in the theft of over $18 million in maple syrup from Quebec’s national reserves, ‘The Sticky’ intertwines elements of cultural humor, thrilling suspense, and poignant drama,” states Prime Video regarding the series.

Showrunner and writer Brian Donovan explained to CBC Canada that the series fundamentally revolves around labor issues.

“It reflects the journeys of workers who are being taken advantage of and are fed up with it,” Donovan said to the Canadian news outlet. “We aimed to focus on creating the most engaging narrative about these individuals in their environment, letting authenticity take a back seat when necessary.”
