SZA at Super Bowl 59: Discover Her Must-Listen Songs
Grammy-winning R&B artist SZA is set to perform alongside fellow Grammy winner Kendrick Lamar at Super Bowl 59 this Sunday.
SZA made her mark in the music industry with the launch of her debut album “CTRL” in 2017 and reached even greater heights with her acclaimed second album “SOS” in 2022. Currently, she stars in Sony Pictures’ film “One of Them Days,” featuring Keke Palmer, which debuted at No. 2 at the box office following its release on January 24.
Lamar and SZA have collaborated on music since 2014, recently dropping “30 for 30” from SZA’s “SOS Deluxe: Lana” in December. SZA also contributed to “Luther” and “Gloria” on Lamar’s latest album “GNX,” released in November. Their 2018 song “All the Stars” from “Black Panther: The Album” was nominated for both an Oscar and a Golden Globe for best original song, and it has since racked up almost 2 billion streams on Spotify. In December, the pair announced a joint performance at the “Grand National Tour” starting in April.
As per Stats.fm, an app tracking Spotify listening habits, Iāve dedicated over 5,300 minutes to SZAās music (not counting my vinyl spins of “CTRL”).
If you’re exploring her music and donāt know where to start, trust me when I say these SZA tracks are must-listens before her Super Bowl halftime performance this Sunday.
‘All the Stars’ featuring Kendrick Lamar (2018)
āAll the Starsā is the duoās biggest commercial success, and for good reason. Featured on the 2018 āBlack Pantherā soundtrack, its atmospheric synths and infectious dance beats are complemented by SZAās enchanting vocals and Lamarās sharp verses. It received four nominations at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards, including song of the year and record of the year.
‘Saturn’ (2024)
At the 2025 Grammys, SZA won awards for best R&B song and best R&B performance for āSaturn,ā a dreamy track that takes listeners on an otherworldly adventure. The song addresses themes of nihilism and the desire for escape, questioning lifeās injustices while pondering if a better world exists beyond Earth. Experiencing it live at Governorās Ball NYC last year was nothing short of transformative ā despite its subtle sound, her performance became profoundly immersive.
‘Normal Girl’ (2017)
I canāt help but feature my personal favorite ā and the No. 2 most streamed song on Spotify ā because everyone deserves to hear this unique breakup anthem. āCTRLā paints a vivid picture of my own youthful experiences and tackles the difficulties of navigating your 20s. In āNormal Girl,ā SZA expresses a longing for an emotionally deep connection and wants to be recognized not only as strong but also softer. The song dives into deep introspection ā questioning whether the inability to find the right partner indicates a deeper flaw within oneself. It echoes a memorable scene from HBOās āGirlsā in 2013, where Lena Dunham’s character confesses to Patrick Wilson, āPlease donāt tell anyone this, but ā¦ I want to be happy. I want what everyone wants.ā
‘Kill Bill’ (2023)
Ever felt so strongly towards an ex that revenge seems tempting? Youāre in luck: SZA has a song for that. Her haunting ballad āKill Billā draws inspiration from Quentin Tarantino’s 2003 film of the same name, where Uma Thurman’s character seeks vengeance against an ex-lover. The music video features dramatic scenes of confrontation with SZA depicted holding her exās bleeding heart. In April 2023, SZA secured her first No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 with āKill Bill,ā bolstered by a remix featuring Doja Cat.
‘Good Days’ (2020)
āGood Daysā opens with a serene, angelic melody and carries an optimistic message: āGood day in mind / Safe to take a step out.ā Released in December 2020 (and later featured on āSOSā in 2022), this song offered a breath of fresh hope during challenging times. It also gained traction on TikTok, thanks to the catchy lyric āI donāt miss no ex / I donāt miss no text / I choose not to respond.ā
’30 For 30′ featuring Kendrick Lamar (2024)
ā30 for 30ā is one of SZA and Lamarās latest collaborations, included on SZAās album āSOS Deluxe: LANA.” It marks a return to their roots ā featuring a quicker tempo than āDoves in the Windā (2017) yet maintaining a consistent, minimalist beat. Given its recent release, thereās a good chance we may hear it live at this Sundayās Super Bowl halftime show.
