Taylor Swift addresses rumors of a feud with Charli XCX
Taylor Swift is putting to rest Charli XCX fans’ speculations about any animosity between them.
Swift expressed admiration for Charli in a feature for New York Magazine about the “365” artist published on Monday.
“I’ve been impressed by Charli’s musical talent ever since I first heard ‘Stay Away’ in 2011. Her songwriting is always imaginative and original,” Swift shared with Vulture. “She elevates a song in unexpected ways, and she’s been doing it for more than ten years. I love witnessing the rewards of such dedication.”
On her end, Charli responded to rumors that her latest album’s song “Brat” was aimed at Swift, which has drawn attention thanks to a summer filled with lime green memes, support from Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign, and a spot on former President Barack Obama’s summer 2024 playlist. Fans speculated that lyrics from track 3, “Sympathy is a knife,” expressed Charli’s jealousy towards Swift, with lines like “Don’t wanna see her backstage at my boyfriend’s show.”
Charli is currently engaged to George Daniel, the drummer for The 1975; meanwhile, Swift was previously rumored to be in a relationship with The 1975’s frontman, Matty Healy, who is now engaged to Charli’s friend, Gabbriette Bechtel. Additionally, Charli opened for Swift during the Reputation Tour in 2018.
“People will believe what they want,” Charli told Vulture. “That song reflects my thoughts and feelings, my anxiety, and how my mind creates stories when I feel insecure. I don’t want to be in those situations physically when I’m battling self-doubt.”
While both artists have avoided commenting on the rumored tension, some fans have taken these theories too far, prompting Charli to advocate against fans trying to pit women against each other.
“Can people who do this please stop? Whether online or at my shows,” Charli expressed in a June Instagram story after fans chanted “Taylor is dead” in Portuguese during one of her concerts, as reported by Deadline and Today.com. “This goes against everything I represent, and it disturbs me that anyone thinks there’s space for this within our community. I won’t accept it.”
Charli shared that part of the inspiration behind “Sympathy” came from her struggles with comparing her achievements to those of The 1975.
“Sometimes I would look at their performances and think, ‘Oh my God … I’ll never perform in venues like this.’ That feeling made me jealous,” she admitted. “I confided in Matty and George about this, and they both were like, ‘Cut it out. What are you even saying?’”
Charli XCX and Lorde maintain ‘good vibes’ following friendship rumors
In the same cover feature, Charli also confirmed that she and Lorde have mended any misunderstandings after fans noticed tension in the lyrics of Charli’s “Girl, so confusing.” The two artists chose to address the issue by collaborating on a remix titled “Girl, So Confusing Version with Lorde.”
“Everything is on good terms. It’s all good vibes,” Charli shared. “Honestly, all of this has brought us closer together.”
Lorde was among those who celebrated at Charli’s star-studded 32nd birthday bash in Los Angeles earlier this month.
“It’s a moment to remember,” Lorde captioned a photo of herself dancing with Charli on her Instagram story.
