‘Thank You, Taylor Swift’
In response, Direct Relief expressed their heartfelt thanks to the superstar shortly after her announcement.
“Direct Relief is incredibly thankful to Taylor Swift for her amazing generosity and support for our wildfire response initiatives,” said Dr. Byron Scott, CEO of the organization, in part. “Her compassion and dedication to the communities affected by these devastating fires in Southern California is truly inspiring.”
Updates on the firefighting efforts
A series of wildfires began in the Los Angeles region on January 7. Powerful, hurricane-like winds initially spread flames and embers into surrounding areas. The fires turned communities into ashes, taking 25 lives, consuming over 40,300 acres, destroying in excess of 12,000 homes and businesses, and forcing more than 200,000 people to evacuate.
As per Cal Fire updates on Thursday, the Palisades Fire had reached 22% containment while the Eaton Fire was contained at 55%.
Swift’s close friends suffer loss
While Swift’s property in Beverly Hills was not in the evacuation zones, her close friends Miles and Keleigh Teller lost their home in Pacific Palisades. Miles appeared in Swift’s “I Bet You Think About Me” music video, and Keleigh accompanied Swift as her date to the 2024 Golden Globe Awards.
Teller shared a final photo of her home, capturing white smoke wafting above its roof as she pulled away from the driveway.
“To everyone who reached out, I can’t thank you enough,” Teller wrote in part of her post. “Your kindness has meant everything to me, and I will never forget it. Our community has come together in ways I couldn’t have envisioned. Pacific Palisades, I love you more than words, and we will return stronger than ever.”
Celebrities lend support
Swift is one of many celebrities offering assistance to the Los Angeles community.
On Monday, Beyoncé’s BeyGood foundation donated $2.5 million. In their Instagram announcement, they indicated that the funds would assist families in the Altadena/Pasadena area who lost their homes, as well as local churches and community centers serving those affected.
On January 9, actress Jamie Lee Curtis stated on Instagram that she and her family would be donating $1 million to “start a support fund for our great city and state and the wonderful people living there.”
Grammys to proceed and contribute funds
The 2025 Grammy Awards are set to take place on February 2, and the event aims to raise further funds to assist those affected.
Harvey Mason Jr., CEO of the Recording Academy, and board chair Tammy Hurt sent out a letter to academy members confirming they initiated the Los Angeles Fire Relief Effort last week with an initial donation of $1 million to support music industry professionals and artists.
The duo confirmed that the donations have now exceeded $2 million in emergency funding.
“This year’s awards will carry a refreshed sense of purpose,” their letter stated, “aiming to raise additional funds for wildfire relief efforts and honor the bravery of first responders who risk their lives to protect us.”
Swift is expected to attend the event, where she is nominated for six Grammy awards.ift Beat.
