USA Men’s Wheelchair Basketball Triumphs Over Spain in Paralympics Opener

PARIS — In a repeat of their earlier matchups this summer, where the USA claimed victory with scores of 61-57 and 70-65, Team USA once more defeated Spain, this time by a score of 66-56, during their Paralympic debut at Bercy Arena on Thursday afternoon.

“We’re facing the best of the best,” stated Trevon Jenifer from Team USA. “This tournament is significant, so we anticipated a strong challenge from Spain. They played exceptionally well in our first match.”

The game began with both teams exchanging baskets, and after Jake Williams hit two consecutive three-pointers, the Americans took a 10-6 lead just under four minutes into the game.

Following a second-chance score by Jenifer, Spain answered back with a three-pointer, coming within one point of the lead. They had a chance to take the lead, but missed a layup, ending the first quarter with the Americans ahead 18-17.

Williams was instrumental on the court, contributing eight points along with two rebounds and two assists in the first quarter.

The second quarter continued with intensity as Jenifer scored two points at the start, but Spain quickly responded, taking their first lead with 5:25 remaining in the half. However, Bell promptly scored to regain the lead for USA at 24-23.

Spain managed to lead only briefly, as the USA kept the game close, eventually leading 32-29 at halftime.

“Spain is an exceptional team,” remarked Steve Serio, the team captain and five-time Paralympian. “We were aware of their capabilities. They are never to be underestimated. While we have much to improve on, we’ll review the game footage and work on it.”

In the third quarter, Team USA began to create separation when Serio scored on an and-one play, pushing their advantage to 36-29. Spain continued to fight back, but the Americans held off their advances. Jenifer’s fast break basket with 3:01 left in the quarter widened the lead to eight points.

Entering the final quarter, Team USA led 46-40, but Spain rallied close, narrowing the deficit to one possession with just over six minutes remaining. Nevertheless, the Americans maintained their grip on the game, finishing with a 66-56 win.

Jake Williams topped the scoreboard with 22 points and seven assists, emphasizing that this is only the beginning.

“There’s a lot of enthusiasm for kicking off the tournament,” Williams stated. “Facing Spain is common in these events, so we feel prepared.”

This victory puts Team USA in a favorable position for the upcoming group matches as they look forward to their next game against the Netherlands on Saturday at 10 a.m. ET.
