New Research Shows Plugged Wells and Decreased Injection Rates Diminish Induced Earthquake Occurrences in Oklahoma

Wastewater injection resulting from oil and gas production in Oklahoma caused a dramatic rise in seismic activity in the state between 2009 and 2015. But regulatory efforts to backfill some injection wells with cement and reduce injection volumes have been effective in lowering the state's induced earthquake rate, according to a new study. Teenager Charged with Murder in Tragic Shooting of Chicago Postal Worker

15-Year-Old Arrested for Murder of Chicago Postal Worker

A teenager, aged 15, has been taken into custody regarding the tragic summer shooting of a Chicago postal worker and mother, as confirmed by police this week.

The youth was apprehended in Iowa on Monday and is facing a felony first-degree murder charge for the shooting of postal worker Octavia Redmond, according to reports from Chicago police to YSL News.

Redmond, who was 48, was shot and killed while performing her route in the West Pullman area of Chicago on July 19, based on information provided by the police and the coroner’s office.

Police have not disclosed a motive for the murder.

Authorities stated that they utilized surveillance footage from both police and private cameras to identify the teenager and track his movement before and after the incident.

Detectives also received an anonymous tip that led them to the suspect, and they are currently investigating other individuals of interest related to the case.

YSL News is withholding the name of the teenager due to his minor status.

Details of Octavia Redmond’s Shooting

The shooting incident occurred around late morning on July 19 while Redmond was on her delivery route.

According to the U.S. Postal Service, the suspect exited a stolen white Dodge Durango, approached Redmond, and shot her multiple times from close range before escaping in the vehicle.

Redmond was pronounced dead at a hospital following the shooting.

The police located the suspect’s vehicle the next day, as reported by the USPS.

In a news release on Tuesday, the Postal Service emphasized, “Redmond was a devoted wife and mother who was a familiar face to the community she served. We hope this brings some comfort to the Redmond family.”

“Such senseless violence has no place in our society,” stated Ruth M. Mendonça, Inspector in Charge of the USPS Chicago Division. “When postal workers are targeted, our inspectors will tirelessly pursue justice for the victims, their families, and our community. This arrest marks an initial step toward achieving justice for Mrs. Redmond.”

Demetrius Redmond, the victim’s husband, has launched a fundraising campaign to support the family with funeral costs.

“The Redmond family is heartbroken by the unexpected loss of our beloved queen,” he expressed on the fundraising page. “All funds raised will honor Octavia and assist her family in managing our grief and funeral expenses.”

As of Wednesday, nearly $8,000 had been raised towards the $12,000 target for the campaign.

Court Date Set for Teen in Postal Worker Murder Case

As reported by Chicago police, the arrest of the teenager was a joint effort involving the U.S. Marshals, who captured him in Cedar Rapids.

The suspect has been extradited back to Chicago, where he faces charges as a juvenile, confirmed the Cook County State’s Attorney Office to NBC Chicago. The next court hearing for the teen is scheduled for November 1.

YSL News is currently awaiting a response from the prosecutor’s office.

“As the investigation is ongoing, we encourage anyone with information to contact us so we can identify and locate other individuals involved,” urged Postal Inspector Spencer Block in a statement to YSL News on Wednesday.
